View Full Version : Tip - Powder Catcher for Adjustments

I have a PiggyBack multiple stage RCBS setup - where you crank the handle and out comes a round. As such, there is a powder station with the powder dispenser mounted above it that dumps a premeasured amount into the cartridge case before the final operation, which is bullet seating and crimping.

In order to adjust the powder, you have to crank out a few measures and turn the adjustment knob. I found that using the little flat scale pan is not a good idea, because the powder splashes unless you are extremely careful.

Solution: A plastic 35mm film cannister - the type that comes with most new rolls of film. It fits perfectly over the powder dump and is short enough to comfortably fit into the press. You can dump several measures into it to clear the last adjustment before measuring your load, and the plastic cannister allows smooth dumping of the powder. It also pours easily into the scale pan.

I disconnect the cotter pin that holds the actuator arm to the powder dump lever, leave the station idle and lowered, and can do all the testing I want until I get the exact measurement of powder needed. No more dealing with removal of cartridge cases or lifting the powder station off the press.

Good idea johndefresno. I do my thing on a single stage, but the film container would still work better than the scale pan to get things dialed in. Very useful tip.
Thank you,
