Hi All , My Dad and I just started reloading for his 300 Weatherby. We managed to get the dies set today for resizing and seating. Now the question is do we crimp or not? and if so what type roll, taper or something like the lee factory crimpdie? These will be hunting rounds which of course will be loaded into the Vangaurd so the thought bullets moving under recoil concerns me. One thing I know for sure is if we do crimp I want it to be a separate step from the seating. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

Welcome to the forum!
I've tried the Lee FCD recently; it seems an improvement for .30-06 loads on my Rem 700 bolt gun, but didn't help my .223 NEF single-shot. I think the only way to find out is to try it on some of your loads and then compare. Others here may have more experience with it, so I'm curious as well. Good luck!

I found that using once fired Speer brass (nickel), a 200gr GS, and RCBS dies that I couldn’t' t crimp.
Every time a tried (even a very light crimp) it deformed the case rather than apply a crimp.
Have not tried this with my new un fired brass brass.. But given that I was able to put 40+lbs on the un-crimped combo with out changin OAL, I don't think I'll bother attempting to crimp!
Best of luck
Nate
Generally, you don't crimp these at all. They'll form fit, and despite the heavy recoil, won't move in the case. I use RCBS dies and Hornady bullets, which have the cannelure, but have never crimped...now several hundred rounds. And none of my .300 shooting buddies have either.

I have used the Lee FCD and like it fine, but I think a light roll crimp is also good. The problem most people have is they put too heavy a crimp on, it doesn't take as much as you think.
Also when loading your magazine, be careful how you load it, and have all the case heads tight against the back, this will avaoid a lot of shock in recoil.

Thankyou all for your responses and insight. We're gonna go crimpless , unless we end up having any problems.
Thankyou all again.
