Anybody using these two powders in 45 Colt with 300gr+ bullets? If so, please specify the bullet and OAL of loaded cartridge. Would like to use them behind 310 SWC to reach 1100-1200 fps from 7.5” Bisley. Any comment regarding muzzle blast comparing with other powders? Would like to have a muzzle blast up to 30-06 level. Thanks.

Hi Onty,

I use and like VV N 110 in .44 magnum and in the .45 LC. I have no experience with the VV0 N105.

Using BTB 310 grn. WLNGC and 21.7 grns. N 110 I chrono out to 1,137 fps. I seat the bullet out to an over all length of 1.695 - - but that is in a Ruger Super Red Hawk which has a longer cylinder than the Bisley. Also I cut the barrel length down on the SRH to 4.80 inches so the Bisley 7.5 barrel may give you another 50 to 75 fps

I also have used Hodgdon H 110 with this bullet and using 21.6 grns I chrono out at 1,145 and again with the 1.695 OAL.

The N 110 is a more accurate load and has more of a "push" for recoil than does the H 110 which I describe as more 'snappy'.

My .44 magum load using the N 110 takes a BTB 325 grn LCMNGC out to 1,400 to 1,420 fps with incredible accuracy. But I hold on to my hat when I touch this one off, actually I just go pick it up and put it back on!

Hope this helps,

Fletch

Thanks again Fletch! 1400 fps with 44-325 gr bullet, that’s something. Looks like that N110 is one of the best, if not the best powder for 44 heavy loads. I have some more questions, if you don’t mind;

1. What’s the load in 44 magnum that made 325 gr. bullet going 1400 fps and what’s the barrel length?
2. Did you try any load with that 325 gr. bullet to make about 1100-1200 fps by using N110?

Regards, Onty.

Hi again Onty,

Sorry for the delay in answering.

I am a bit hesitant to give the load out mainly because I don't want anyone trying it unless they are using the Ruger Super Redhawk or a Freedom Arms Revolver - - but having said that here are the stats:
325 grain BTB LCMN GC .4315" Diameter
Federal Cases
Federal magnum large pistol primer
21.7 grns VV N 110
1.770" OAL
'Very Firm Crimp'
Accuracy 1 to 1.5 inch grps 25 yards Bench
Rest.
1,411 fps 16 fps extreme spread SD 6 fps
Ruger Super Redhawk 9.5 inch barrel length.

Same set up as above using:
17.5 grns VV N 110 1,184 fps 31 fps ES 11 SD
Poor Accuracy
18.6 grns VV N 110 1,268 fps 37 fps ES 13 SD
Good Accuracy 2" group at 25 yards
I also tested Garrett .44 MAG 330 grn 'Hammer Head' which he states will give 1,385 fps and I chronoed it at: 1,407 fps with an ES of 17 and a SD of 6. It's accuracy matched my load with five shot groups consistently in the 1 to 1.5 inch grouping. Excellent ammo but again for the Ruger Super Redhawk or Freedom Arms Revolvers only.

I think you can find an article by Mike Dio in the BTB Tech Notes that is really worth reading on the .44 Magnum and some of the principles, not the loads, can be applied to other "Magnumized" loads.

Good Luck and Good shootin',

Fletch
