Has anyone out there tried roll cripping the Lyman sabot slug?
I spoke to a Lyman tech who said fold crip only.
Spoke to someone at Ballistics Produces who said it was OK, but keep the pressure under ten thousand lbs.
I'm using 45.5 grains of Blue Dot which delivers 9300 lbs.
I'm going to try it, I'll post the results.

I've been loading that same load but a fold crimp. I never tried to roll crimp that load.

Why did they say to keep it under 10,000?

10000lb seems to be the recommened maximum pressure for shot gun barrels, thats what I was told by Lyman when I spoke to them about reloading slugs. If you load there 12 ga. sobot with 45 grains of blue dot, which is in there reloading book you will know what it's like to shot an elephant gun.

I don’t know what it is that most accounts for the recoil in any firearm, is it the pressure or is it the slug weight? I think the burning rate of the powder is where it all is. You can use faster burning for low weight and slower burning as the weight goes up. What I do know, is that using Remington uniboby hulls with the Lyman sabots and 45 grains of blue dot is the most accurate I’ve seen. I can consistently shoot groups where every shot touches the other at fifty yards. It may look like an oversized pellet, but it’s really great. When I spoke to Lyman about using rolled crimping for their sabots, they were dead set against it and said it would increase the pressure. I did it anyway with a lighter load and it lost accuracy. The crimp is the best, you just need to mark the shells so you know what’s inside. It’s really really hard to hit a quail with a slug.

what wad and primer are you using. Also what is the color of the base wad in your remington hulls

I’.m using Winchester WAA12F114 wads and winchester w209 primers. About the base wad, it looks black, the hulls are once fired Remington unibodys I bough from Precision Products, an on line company. Powder is 45.5 grains of blue dot, not the 45 I said before. I'm shooting a rifled Remington 870 , not positive about the scope it's a Busnell ?x4 with a 6" eye relief . When I bough this gun it had a 10 lb. trigger pump and after arguing with Remington and convinced them I wasn't a jerk they finally sent me what they call a competition spring, now the gun has a 4 lb. pump. Shoots great but it kicks hard, not what you want to shot a lot. I’.m going to load some .69 cal balls, just for the fun of it and see what they’ll do. The slug loading book I got from Ballistics Product has a formula with green dot, federal gold metal hulls and a wad with a deep cup on both ends and no pedals.
I want to see what this does. Ball is .69 and barrel is.72. If you put the ball down the barrel it rolls right through. I’ll let you know what happens.

I think you're right, but I want to play around a little. I'm going to a gun show on Saturday and I think I'm going to pick up something in a smooth bore with no choke to shoot them out of. I have an old Beretta Silver snipe O/U, full and improved modified, the 870 and a K-80 Trap. The only one I'm willing to shoot them out of is the 870 which is rifled. I want to try a smooth bore too. I question some of the recipes from Ballistics Products books. I loaded a bunch of buckshot from one of their recipes and they were supposed to be 2 3/4, but they came out to long because their wads were to long. They never took into consideration that the same weight of buck takes up more room than shot. I'll let you know how they turn out.

PS Looks like I can attach files here so maybe I'll take some photos of the targets if they can hit the paper. Somewhere in my house I have a target from the 870 and the lyman slugs, if I can find it I'll send that too.

I had full intention of posting photos of my first targets until I started shooting. Ive made my adjustments. Bought new rings for my scope And obtained three new powders. Herco, Unique, and Steel. I am currently loading with BlueDot. Hopefully tomorrow my new projectiles will arrive, hard cast Lyman 525, BPI Dangerous Game and LBC Blue Force. I should be able to come up with a combo that shoots good in the next week or two.

I hope this attachment comes out right. Its the last target I shot with the 870 and the lyman slugs. There are two flyers but I think the rest of them are pretty impressive.
The one on the bottom right is a 1" group, all from 50 yds.
The target range is 50 and 100yds so I can't shoot to 75. !00 yards gets me about a 6" group, still really good for home had slugs shot out of a cannon.
This is not a photo, it's a scan the I had to piece together, but it's real. I hope the attachment is OK, if not I'll let my son fix it, you know computers are there thing.

Correction: I meant the target on the bottom left.

I went to the gun show on Saturday, I picked up a Mossberg 500 special purpose, 18 1/2" barrel, smooth bore with ghost ring sites. I'm just waiting for UPS to deliver the hulls I ordered. The wearther here is pretty cold so I won't be going to the range this week. I don't expect anything special from the balls I'm loading, just hope to hit the paper.

I shot the balls out of a Mossberg Special Purpose with ghost ring sights. 20" barrel. Shot like sh!#. maybe 71 cal. would shoot a lot better. The wad I used was from Ballistic products, there were no peddles just the cup, which was the same on both ends. also the recipe came from them. Right now I'm busy shooting a new Hoyt Bow I just purchase. I also resently bough a Savage 223 with the Accutrigger, don't let anyone tell you this trigger is bad, I never shot anything this good.

Hi,
Try either a cloth patch on that .69 ball or else load it inside of a standard one piece plastic wad with petals. I have had excellent results with a lubed cloth patched round ball on top of a petal-less wad like the B-P brush wad you used.

I have had some success improving round ball accuracy out of a shotgun using WAA12 wads by first putting 5 #4 buckshot around the bottom of the wad to make sort of a self centering formation to drop the round ball in, but you have to take into account the additional weight with your powder charge. It helps, but the Lyman 525 sabots are vastly superior, and with the large meplat , they punch a lot harder than a round ball. Just a thought...
