Hello, Does anyone know anything about Winchester 12GA Pump Shotguns that were recalled many years ago or all bought up or back by Winchester becaue they were being called "knucklebusters" and hurting their sales and corporate image? If so, what is one of thse worth in todays market, I received one from an 80 year old neighbor as a gift...He said the gun today was easily worth over $1,000.00...because very few are in known existance. I don't believe his story is true, but you never know. I'm not interested in selling the gun just curious about the true story, this may take a pretty elderly gentlemen to recall. Thanks for any assistance.

My Garanddad used to tell me a story something like this, But he told me it was the lever action 10 and 12 gauge models. The lever made your knuckles sore working the actions. I fired a 10 gauge one my neighbor has and the lever does smack your knuckles on recoil. Maybe this is what he was talking about??????? God Bless Steve

What is the Winchester Model number of the shotgun you received? That will help us sort out the facts in this matter. I am not familiar with the story from your neighbor. All the best...

The Winchester shotgun you refer to as a knucklebuster is the Model 1897 pump action. The Winchester that was recalled way back was the Model 1893 pump, which was the immeadiate predecessor to the Model 1897. The 1893 wasn't designed to handle smokeless powder loads, which were just being developed when this gun was introduced. Winchester then developed the improved Model 1897 shotgun and the serial numbers started where the 1893's left off. If you owned the earlier version Winchester would replace it with the new 1897 Model.
