U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Action Alert

An Ohio bill designed to help increase the number of sportsmen in the field will be heard in a house committee next week. The bill is part of a national effort to recruit hunters to the sport.

Ohio HB 296, introduced by Rep. Stephen Buehrer, R-Delta, will create an apprentice hunting license. It is scheduled for sponsor testimony in the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee on Oct. 26.

The apprentice hunting license that the bill establishes will allow qualified, licensed adult hunters to introduce others to the sport prior to completing a hunter education course. The apprentice hunter would have to be in close proximity to the adult mentor while in the field.

Here in Mo the state established youth deer, and turkey seasons. Where, as you described, a properly licensed adult can accompany a youth under 16 years of age while hunting during those special seasons. The begining age for this hunt is specifide as when the adult deems the child is ready for the responsability. I beleive that this season is in its fourth year, and I have heard nothing but good things about it. I've taken my oldest niece out hunting deer with me last year, and I'm looking forward to going with her again this year. Any way you look at it, taking kids out into the outdoors is first class entertainment! I hope Ohio passes that bill and like us establishes a special season for the young uns.
