I hope I've put this in the right place. I'm not a computer whiz.
Anyway, I've seen all the marvelous categories on this site and have read quite a few. This seems like a nice place for me to learn. From what I've seen already, there are a lot of folks here that have the same ideas about hunting or shooting that I do. I've been searching the net for a place where folks discuss using single shots and such so that I could pick up some of their savvy.
I'm a school teacher, I live on a small farm where I hunt and raise honeybees. Also have a small muscadine vineyard that Mrs. Sackett makes jelly from. A cousin of mine owns the local winery so I don't bother making anything else.
Well, I'm blabberin on, so let me say again, Hi folks.

welcome sackett! i too am a new user to this site and joined about 20 mins ago for all of the above reasons you listed. whenver i began doing online searches through search engines as to various ballistic info etc. i always get directed to this site! just goes to show that just about everything has been discussed here and that the fellas here know a bit about the ol' shooting and hunting game. for all "y'all" i might do a bit of an intro as sackett did, im at university at the moment and from the mighty land down under (oz) and it is interesting to hear the same sort of things come out of your mouths as they do out of hunters and shooters here. i have a CZ452 .22wmr and mainly hunt rabbits, foxes, cats, hares. just coming up to our summer so there are rabbits bounding about in large numbers. i have also hunted pigs, goats and kangaroos (under permit of course!), and ducks.
i hope you guys can answer any of my q's that pop up in the forums in the near future. and hey if you have any q's about anything i will give it a go to answer them with my minimal knoweledge bank! he he.
cheers sackett

Yep, looks like a good place to set up camp for a spell. Wish I could answer everyone like some foks can, but I haven't learned that trick.
The thing that caught my eye here was the section on Single Shot Rifles. Then, there was a letter from someone about closer range shooting. You see, that really appeals to me because thats the type of shooting I have where I hunt. I mean woods distances and all.
From my high school days I was fascinated by two completely different rifles. The M1A(M14) and the Sharps. I wanted one or both so badly.
I was able to buy a M1A about 20 years ago to satisfy that craving. Then, some old timer took me under his wing and started teaching how to deer hunt. Since that was the only deer suitable gun I had, I used it, but with only about 3 or 4 shots loaded. I was so happy to have that unique gun that I didn't care how many eyebrows I raised. I never missed a deer with it and I never had to shoot twice. Matter of factly, the circle of guys I was with said if they heard 2 shots, they knew it wasn't me. That pleased me no end.
Some time later another guy turned me on to muzzleloading and I got a Knight .50 that seemed simple enough for me to get used to.
Still I had this craving for a Sharps or single shot because I was learning that I was a single shot hunter at heart. Guess I 've known that all along.
Anyway, I didn't have money enough for a Sharps, and I got a Ruger #1 in 45-70. While I'm satisfied with it and hunt almost exclusively with it now, when I'm not out with the muzzleloader, I still want a Sharps. One day I'll get one.
Well anyway, I'm looking forward to picking up advice around here. Thanks for the great welcome.

P.S. I'm a big admirer of Louis L'Amour and I took the Sackett moniker in honor of him. Guess if I were to identify myself with one of the Sackett families, it would have to be the Cumberland crowd. The Clinch Mountain clan is tough.
