Bad idea to shoot prairie dogs that early. Dakota weather could turn into a blizzard. Wait until mid June. The pups will be grown and out in the sun.

No offense, but its not called hunting. It is a sport involving precision shooting. Not hunting at all unless you want to make it challenging by using a 22 rifle, open sights, and a long belly crawl through cactus and snakes to get within range.

Good shooting can be found throughout Buffalo Gap Nat'l Grasslands. Public lands. Get your map from USDA office in Wall, SD.

try mid may for the young dogs, they are less or have no experience w/ hunters. some times they even, if you're lucky, line up for 2-3 kills w/ 1 shot. prairie dog parts flyin everywhere.

I agree with T.R.,March is NOT the time for the Dakota's.The earliest I 've ever gone was the 1st of June, the temp's were in the 40's but froze the trigger finger cuz of the wind....always wind in Dakota.Doggin wasn't the best either.Little buggers don't like cold weather either.I was in Wyoming the 1st week of Jan.coyote hunting around New Castle in the Thunder Basin grasslands.Drier than a f--t and very few coyotes. We drove off the road for 13 miles, way back in the sticks and found some prairie poodles.Sun was out, windy, temp. in the 60's.rattled off a dozen rounds and then there they were.."gone".hard to believe back that far that they were that skittish.
Anyhow,if your looking for a couple of spots, yer likely as not gonna have to hunt places for yourself. No one is gonna tell where their hot spots are.If there is such a place anymore.try the National grass lands around Pierre and try calling this guy.
"Dog Heaven" He says he has 500 acres.I hunted it a couple of times. He charges $50.00 per day per gun.It was ok for one day and you can pick the area.We always pick "the big field".His name is LES HORSLEY - call 1-6-5-452-3446
He is south of Murdo off I-90 at White River,South Dakota.
Good shootin and I hope you get lot's of air.
