Was looking to get a Marlin 1894 FG 41 mag. I have this caliber in a revolver for close work on whitetails and for stopping hogs but was curios of the effective range of this caliber in a rifle. Also what bullets do you shoot and why?

Thanks

Hog Hunter,

I've got a Marlin 94S in .41 that was made in the late eighties. Never seem to be in the right spot when I would carry her hunting. My limit would be 100yds/100m. I've installed a Williams receiver sight on mine that is quite acceptable for me. I've loaded some 170 JHP/210 JHPs and 215 LSWC for deer but again never used them except on paper. This is the sixth straight hunting season I'm missing again do to being overseas. Maybe next year! What pistol do you have? I'm partcile to Smiths N frames.

I would extend that range a little. When you run magnum pistol cartridges in a rifle, you are adding 300-500fps at the muzzle, generally. Roughly speaking, the rifle bullets will be going at least as fast at 100 yards, as the revolver bullets will at the handgun's muzzle.

You could sight in 2" high at 100 yards with the rifle, this should be dead on at 125 yards, and about 3" low at 150. That is a very usable trajectory in the field.

Anyway.... with the faster velocities of the rifle, I would stick with a good hard cast bullet. Pistol bullets may or may not hold together if you get a close shot.

Good luck!

Another .41fan here. Used one of two loads, either a hard cast 210-220gr. bulelt or if I was unable to cast (or just too lazy) would often load the old Speer 220gr. 1/2 jacketed SWC. Either worked fine on deer when loaded behind a stiff cahrge of H110 or 296.

Thinking something on the order of 100-150yrds, but leaning towards the shorter distance. IF I thought I'd have chances at shots longer than that, I'd leave the little carbine at home.

Thanks for the info. I believe I just read that Federal will be making a 41 mag hunting load in their new Fusion line of ammo.

Thanks

Hmmm, didn't Federal already have a 'CastCore' hunting load in the .41 Mag? Maybe a 250 grain bullet or so?

Two bold listings will give you enough energy out to a little over 50 yards. These are for handguns not rifles like the new MArlin in 41mag.
