Any time I buy a new///old gun_1918 94 src_ I have the urge to clean off some of the gunk that has accumulated over the years. Its like bonding. I like to use Ballistol and a clean T shirt and usually surface rust will come off. When I rub a little on the reciever which has a nice overall patina I get a brown/gray color on the rag. I guess this means I'm taking off some of the finish or patina that is left. I assume this is not good as I dont want to lose any existing finish, patina or other wise. I was rubbing with Tri Flow lubricant with tefflon, nothing caustic. Is this to be expected on an old gun or should I just back off on the cleaning in the future?
Thanks

It's to be expected and, IMO, it certainly will not hurt anything. You're removing some of the surface gunk & rust. That's what you're seeing. Hoppes #9 and 0000 steel wool, rubbed lightly, will do an even better job.
