What is Super Grade. From what I have been able to find out it is upgraded wood and swivels. Is there action work? Say I don't care about wood. Would i save money with the Sporter and a smith? I'm left handed. There is no commercial listing. Does that make a difference?

Hello DaveJ,
I can give you a partial answer and sure others can fill in, but normally "super grade" is often related to Winchester's nomenclature for upscale level of firearms in terms of fit and finish, quality of wood, extra workmanship as in flush mounted swivel bases rather than just a swivel stud screwed into the stock, hand polished bolts and raceways, more elaborate checkering, etc. Now, does the super grade shoot any better than a standard grade?? Probably not, but it would be "prettier."
Super Grade level of rifle would not qualify for as many upgrades as say a Custom Shop grade of firearm. There you can specify even brand of barrel, engraving, grade of wood, with or without enlays, and the list goes on as long as the check book will hold out!! I do think that Winchester will build a left hand Custom level rifle for a customer, but not sure about the so called "supergrade" version. Others will pitch in here am sure and give additional points on your question.

Welcome to the forum DaveJ. dsiteman pretty well summed up supergrade. This was a winchester name for an upgraded rifle.

If your looking for a left handed rifle several companies are producing those including Winchester, Remington, and Weatherby to name a few. what you buy depends upon what you want. Most companies have pretty good products and if your shopping you will want the one that fits and feels best to you.

As for custom rifles there's more out there today than ever before and the pocket book is the only limit. I personally like Remingtons and now have a 280 mountian rifle that's rapidly turning into my favorite. Alas my 8 mm Rem mag has set in the gun case so far this hunting season. I think I saw a tear run down it's stock last time I was in the gun case.

This is my 280, it has a Simmons ATEC 2.8-10 variable and a super sling. Gets nice one inch five shot groups at a hundred.

Thank you for the replies and the welcome. I appreciate it.
That is a nice weapon. I am definately after a model 70. The 700 + 300 for the super grade option didn't seem to be that bad of a deal if there was action work. The wood and swivels are not worth 300 to me. The only lefties I saw from the custom shop started at 3000. Not happening. The sporter is very nice and so is the price. Thanks again.
