I just finished tuning up a rifle trigger and was putting the action into the stock...
Had a brain fart on which action screw to tighten hard first. I think my old drill was to lightly tighten both screws to hold everything together, then tap the rifle butt on the floor a couple times to push the recoil lug back tight.
Then I think I should tighten the front screw down and then the back...for the best accuracy.
WOuld appreciate someone w/ a better memory than me giving me the drill.
Thanks!

I think the biggest thing is to make sure the action screw have the same tension on them, that and proper bedding

leverite your method sounds good to me. Some folks use a torque wrench (inch pounds) to make sure the action is tight in the stock. I've never done this over the 45 or so years I've hunted and the 25 plus I ran a small gunsmith bussiness.
I do always recheck the zero after removing and replacing a barreled action. Mostly it won't change the zero much, but I've had it change the zero.
One thing that I've found that makes zero change none or less is to glassbed the recoil lug and action on wood stocked rifles.

The final tension for each action screw depends on the action/ stock design. For example, Mauser action screw (tightness) should be about the same - front and rear. Remington actions screws, however, are different. The front action screw should be a good bit tighter than the rear. This is because on Remington rifles, there is a pillar mounted in the stock, for the front screw. The rear screw, however, rides in an unreinforced hole....through the trigger guard and stock. Overtightening the rear screw can damage the trigger guard and stock. As for other rifle brands, they will vary, based on the design details. Generally, if a rear pillar is installed in the stock, then front and rear screws can be installed to about the same tightness. If not, no.....

thanks tumbledown.
FYI...I blacked out the red dot on my J bolt safety. Now that I've settled down, I don't really notice it.
thanks for the therapy.

Therapy ? You flatter me, sir. I would have thought it more along the lines of irritation (what I do best). Regardless, if you are happy - then I am happy.
Tell me, how does that make you feel ? :D :D :D

I look at that beautiful laminated stock, pick up the rifle and aim at a picture of a big ol bull elk. Then I dry fire, making a perfect shoulder shot.
That's happy...or as happy as it gets until the elk is for real!
