I'll be heading up to Montreal in April. What is the process if I want to bring a shotgun or rifle across the border in my car? Any advice would be appreciated.

Read all the fine print here.

Get back to me if you've got more questions. I don't have any personal experience here, but it's best to have the paperwork done before you hit the border.

Make sure the americans know you are taking the firearms out of the usa, because they will be jerks if you show up at the border trying to bring 2 guns into the usa.

They are Jerks even when you have all the proper ATF import paperwork with all approvals required.

Do yourself a favor...stop about 15 miles south of the border. Vermont's a great place to shoot! :)
As much as I like Canada, and especially Montreal, I don't envy those crossing the borders with guns these days. Especially with the push to make it a passport-only border.
Then again, lots of folks head north to hunt from here...not alot of complaints...
good luck

I've heard that you need to buy a transport permit that costs about $150 per year per person to bring guns thru Canada. And that isn't pistols!

A 60 day permit is CDN$25.00, so in theory it's $150 a year, but most visitors could get by on one $25 permit.

I'm glad I asked now, because it sounds like this could take some time. Maybe the Vermont idea makes sense. Thank you all again for your help.

To some of us, Vermont always makes sense! :)
Are you just visiting, or planning a hunt up there? I have no idea what's in season in Canada in the spring.
As many have said, the process seems thorough, if long. Sounds like the current airline situations people have described: if you have your ducks in a row, things should be ok. My guess is that if you're hunting (and can prove it), they'll be easier to deal with. If you're just showing up with guns, might be a bit trickier.
This might be a good place to poke around too:
