Is is possible to convert a Browning BAR to 35 Whelen? Would you just have the existing barrel rebored or would you get a replacement barrel? If reboring, which would be better to start with a 30-06 or a 338 Win Mag? Where would you get a replacement barrel in 35 Whelen?

Thanks

If reboring, I beleive you will need to start with a 06 family cartridge to get to a .35 Whelen (06/.280/.270). It is a common practice for folks with shot out .30-06 bolt guns to have them rebored to .35 Whelen. Not sure how difficult it is for a BAR. It may be simpler and just as cost effective to get a replacement barrel. Someone here should be able to tell you.

Here's a site to look at for reboreing or rebarreling. It's my understanding they have a very good rep for reboring.

http://www.cutrifle.com/

Problem your going to have is your working on a semi-auto rifle. They are much harder to work up a wildcat/or another cartridge that they arn't originally chambered for than a bolt action rifle.

Have a talk with the fella that runs the reboring service at the link I gave you. He will be able to tell you if it can be done and give you some idea of the costs involved.

You might after finding out the costs for such a conversion look at just getting a BLR in .338.

Good luck in your search

Thanks for the responses!!! I know this is probably and unusual endevor. I just think a BAR in 35 Whelen would be too cool.

faucettb, I'll give the guy at cutrifle.com a call and see what he has to say.

Thanks again!

I don't see why the .35 Whelen wouldn't work in a BAR. Not too long before I left the gun shop we converted a .338 Win Mag BAR to .416 Taylor. The rifle cycled just fine.

Rather than go through all the trouble and added expense of converting a BAR 30-06 to 35 Whelen, I'm thinking I'll just pick up a BAR in 338 Win Mag OR a Marlin 1895 45-70.

Thanks to all for your replies.

Did you rebore the .338 barrel or use a different barrel? I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time, but can't find a source for BAR barrels. Thanks. Mark.

I guess it wouldn't have a problem cycling a round...but how was the pressures on a rifle that was origionally designed to contain a CUP of 338, and have it stretching out from the CUP of the 416?

I thought the Taylor was a 338 Win Mag necked up. Thus the pressure level would be similar. Guess it depends on the expansion ratio and how you load it. Hot or Not! 'Dito

I had Dan P. redo a Rem. 700 270 Win into a 338-06 for me about 2 years ago. The rifle will keep 3 shots under an 1". I think that says alot about his quality. If I remember correctly, the cost was around $300 and the turn-around time was about 6 months which was about the same time frame as 3 other shops that I called. I wouldn't hesitate to send him another project if the desire hits me again. I think you're project is really appealing and if you go ahead with it, let us know how it comes out. Sounds just like something that I need as I don't have a Whelen.
