View Full Version : bullet/load for bison
going on a bison hunt, i'll be using a 45-70 contender.
14" barrel,420gr. LBT WLNGC @ 1,220 fps.
would this load be enough for a 900 lb. bison cow?
thanks.
Can't say if that will be enough for a bison as I've never shot one. I was thinking of going to harvest a similar animal to what you describe with an almost identical load in my .480 Ruger revolver. I don't think penetration should be an issue. Where are you considering the hunt? I've been looking at a few places near my home state of Nebraska.

That should be plenty. I killed(culled) a big old cow in 2001 with a .45 Colt (325 LFN @ 1250) out of a stico Ruger Bisley. Got about 40" of penetration including busting the near shoulder blade.

thanks for the info., that helps in the confidence dept., i sure don't want to end up chasing it around the prairie all day or two.

I'd appreciate if you could pass on the name of the outfit when you have time as I'd like to see what they offer. The drive to SoDak is far more scenic than the one to KS. :)

Thanks for the info.
Good luck on your hunt, you'll be in for some very fine eating. Let us know how it works out with the 45-70.

44.6 gr. of imr3031
i was told by jd jones, not to go any higher w/o having them
rechambering it. his chamber will get about 1700 w/ a 400
gr. and about 1600 w/ a 500 gr. the load i have is ok,
i'm not sure i'd want to try a 500 gr. bullet@1600 fps.
out of a 3.5 lb. handgun.

that velocity is cronographed, not an estimate.
