Hello... I have an old remington M1917 enfield that has been sporterized with a shortened stock and now has a scope.. The action of this rifle is very very solid.. Looks like a mauser action to me.. It is a 30-06 and in great shape. I was wondering what it is worth and if it can be turned into a 300 magnum?

Yes, a M1917 can be modified to accept the magnums, including all the Weatherby mags, 8mm Ultra, etc. the bolt face and magazine length and maybe other changes may be required, but is a very common endeavor. Usually the Rem and Win manufactured models are preferred. I have original M1917s in Rem and Win that I am holding. They are strong actions.

SALTY, I have a Winchester Mfg. 1917 Enfield that I converted to .300 Winghester Mag. it mostly consists of removing the ears off where the rear sights were, reworking the Mag box, re-chambering, opening up the bolt face,or changing to a P-14 Enfiels Bolt. (Same as 1917 except chambered for .303 Brit.) I was lucky, as the one I got had a bore that was in new condition, and looked like a mirror. Mine wears an E.C. Bishop Manlicher style stock from the early 60's. The barrel was cut to 21 inches. I don't recommend the short barrel, as with the .300 Winchester the muzzle blast is quite loud, but the rifle is capable of sub-minute of angle accuracy. Whatever you decide to do with it, You have a good base to work from.

All of my best shooters are built on 1917 enfields. ones I have 22/6mm,25/06/280AI,308Norma Mag, 300 win mag, 264 win mag, 338 win mag,9.3x64 brenneke,375 h&h, 358 norma mag,416 taylor. Can't go wrong building on them.
Suppose guys are tired of hearing of my 6mm/284 using the P-17 action. Suffice to say, it's one strong and heavy rifle! :D
