Hi-
I saw a German-made rifle the other day in .306
caliber? I had never heard of this designation, and
wondered if anyone had any further info on it?

Welcome to the forum gap45. Rules are simple, be nice and join in.

I've never heard of a 306 cartridge, but there are a lot of 30 calibres out there along with others that have a standard bore diameter and carry different names. Cartridges such as the 340 weatherby that shoots a .338 diameter bullet for one, the 221 fireball, 220 swift, 223 and 222 Remington all guns that shoot .224 diameter bullets.

Oh I'm working on a German drilling right now that has a barrel designated 8.9mm x72. Some of the older german rifles used the bore diameter instead of the groove diameter. This gun is either a 9X72 or 9.3X72. I'll know for shure when I get a chamber cast done.

I could be something as simple as a typo referring to the 308.

Are you sure it wasn't a .30-06? or .30/06?

I have a friend that has something silimar...

His says the same thing, and it is a 30-06. I bet that when you get it checked, by a smith, headspace and what-not, that it is a 30-06.
