Any hunters from Nc., Wva.or Swva. that hunt around Cliffs or rock slides. Were the eastern mt. goats(Deer) and bears live.Saw a 10 pt. buck come up a rock pile(45 degree + slope)ducking in an out of rocks the size of houses. He beds down on top of a rock thats bigger than most houses were he can see 100yds in any direction.any way I approach he slips off with out exposeing himself for a shot.Ive hunted this deer for three years. Its the biggest bodied deer Ive ever seen. Two years ago I came up the back side of the Mt. to get above him. After crawling across the top when I looked down from a cliff, he was looking up, standing between two large rocks. I could`ve swore he grinned as he ducked around the rocks and quietly slipped away.Anyone know where a person could buy a couple of hand grenades.Last year he followed me staying about 30 yds behind me in the fog.I heard something behind me when I looked I caught a glimpse of him as he turned and headed down the way we came. He`s sneaky and smart.sometimes I think he`s hunting me.This year he hid his body behind a rock and he would look over the rock from time to time up the hill towards me. Started to shoot him between the eyes.Ive seen bears go in and out of these rocks they climb like monkeys and can move faster than you`d think possible.was examing bear spore the other day and he`s been eating deer, full of deer hair.Spooky place when the fog rolls in or the wind gets up.

Good post. I have no advise to offer you. It sounds as though both of you are having fun. Might be good to hook up with this deer after the season and have a few beers while swapping stories.

I hope you are packing a hefty pistol as back up in bearland.
Pack a human siloutte and stand it when you think he's watching you, then back out and ambush.

We have similar terrain here in N.W. Arkansas. Do your mountains have benches? Here old bucks will often bed at the edge of a bench so they can get an elevation change on you in a jump or two. One method we use that works once in a while is a hunter on a high bench and a hunter on the lower edge of the bench below. Both hunters still hunt very slowly and as quietly as possible. The lower hunter should be 50 or 75 yards behind the upper hunter. Often jumped deer ( depending on the wind direction ofcourse) will go down hill and attempt to circle back. The lower hunter often gets a shot. Keeping track of eachother so the hunters don't get too close or too far apart is a problem. We also have turkeys that roam these benches so each hunter slips a mouth call in his mouth and every few minutes softly clucks to the other. Old crafty bucks are tough if not impossible to kill. I am not about to say this method will get you that deer but it may be worth a try.

No advice, Mttop, but it sounds like you're having fun. From your description, you must be over around Whitetop Mtn. Thats some rough country. I grew up in Lee County, which has its share of big rocky ridges, especially on Cumberland and Stone mountains along the Ky line.
You're right about it being spooky in the fog. I was hiking with my brother near Roan Mtn. Tennessee back in the '70s, on one of the balds. We were above the timberline when very heavy fog blew in. It was moving fast, left to right, and soaked our left sides. You couldn't see 50 feet. As we were moving along the trail, every now and then house sized boulders would seemingly pop up out of nowhere. Needless to say, we made camp early that night.
It's good to hear from another SW VA boy on here.
