What would be the maximum effective range on an average bull elk with 265 Hornady factory ammo?

For myself, I'd try to limit it to 150 yards, 200 at the outside. Even when I'd pack a .338Win. Mag., I've never had to shoot an elk at over about 225 yards. I've got 30+ to my credit and most have been shot under 100 yards. See if Hornady has any information on a ballistic chart for them. It might be interesting as the big *slugs aren't real flat shooting. RKBA!

The max velocity listed in 4th ed. is 2200 muzzle for the 265 gr FP in .430. With a 100 yd zero that gives you -3.1" at 150 and -9.5" at 200. Now the bad news, -20" at 250. Just like 41 said, kind of iffy beyond 200. You probably get more out of your 444 but you get the idea.
