Does anybody here have any good or bad experiences with IDPA style competition? I have been thinking about getting involved, but am still undecided. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I.ve shot half a dozen non-santioned matches at my local club. Love it. Will shoot again next year when the weather gets better. Agood test of both your shooting ability under pressure, and your equipments reliability. Excellent training for civilian ccw.

That has been the general response from just about everybody. I am going to a shoot tommorow so I can experience it. I have had pretty extensive training, I just want to make sure I am not wasting my time.

Wixthedog, welcometo the foreum! Great bunch hereabouts. I've shot IDPA for 8yrs. Don't know what level of training you've atained, but I can say as an NRA instructor, its a great skill drill. Also I would agree with Tanker in regard to the ccw aspect. Understand that IDPA is mearly a shooting "sport" and therefore has its own set of unique rules. If you are military or law enforcement and your own training conflicts with something, by all means bring this conflict to the attention of the RO. He will do his best to accomidate you. I think IDPA,USPSA,etc. are outstanding ways to practice provided you keep an open mind.

Thank you for the welcome, I hope I can shed light on something someday! I have been looking into IDPA (and others) for quite a while now and have decided to give it a shot. I have both military and LE training, but I always enjoy shooting and possibly learning new techniques. I will post how it goes after the shoot, but I am sure I will love it and add it to my long list of hobbies!

I started shooting IDPA matches 2 years ago at the urging of a friend. I have so much fun at these matches I get kind of bummed out if I have to miss a match. The people are great, its fun, its compeditive, and its shooing a firearm-what else is there? My daughter and son now go with me and compete-talk about fun!

As it turned out, Texas decided to act like it was actually December and it rained! The match was called off due to rain and we will try again next week. I will post then, hopefully. It is like getting a new gun and not being able to shoot it!!!

I competed in IDPA for a couple-years right after it first got started. It was great-then....and I hear it's improved quite-a-bit on the sound doctrine it was founded on. I have always wanted to get back out there and compete again, and intend-to someday, as soon as I can make the time again.
I highly recomend this style of competitive shooting.

I got my chance to shoot IDPA tonight and I LOVED every minute of it! What have I been doing all of my life to have missed it! I actually got the high score on one of the courses! I am not wanting to do anymore "normal" shooting range stuff anymore.
I recomend this to anybody who has not tried it, it is a great way to hone your survival and instict skills and have a blast doing it.
If anybody is around the Brookshire, Texas area, check out The Impactzone, they are a great bunch of guys who are willing to help somebody get into it.

You'll see some really accomplished shooters. If I may,as an R.O., let me give you 2 pcs. of advice. 1st-Speed comes with time/practice. When starting off,a)Knowthe drill b)draw safely c)aquire the target d)shoot accurately 2nd-Join in, help out, andhave a blast!

I have noticed that the PW thing only excites 1% of the people, you can buy it if you want! ;)
You advice is the best you can give to somebody starting out in my opinion. The guys/gals out there gave me the same advice. I am pretty fortunate. I received some MOUT training while in the Army which is somewhat the same.
