I ran across this a while back.
http://www.serpentswall.com/
We (Americans) tend to think of war as a series of famous battles that Americans were involved in. For WWII, every one knows about Pearl Harbor, Midway, Normandy, Iwo Jima, the bomber missions over Germany, Patton crossing the Rhine, and so on. But there was a whole other brutal conflict over on the other side of Europe that most Americans are probably only vaguely familiar with.
I think it's pretty difficult to comprehend how savage war was on the 'eastern front.' Imagine..... Russians sacrificing (and I do mean sacrificing) hundreds of thousands in a diversionary attack! Not even the main attack.... and the casualties for a few days would rival the total number of American killed in 4 years of war, on 2 major and many minor fronts.
It takes a while to go through, and there's some graphic stuff, but I think that this site really brings some perspective on how little American blood has been shed over the years to preserve our way of life.
Can't imagine the 24 hr. news networks trying to cover the battles for Kiev ... and they'd have probably been shot at by both sides, if they were there.
The Sherman tank full of holes says it all. Sometimes technology doesn't win.
