I was looking at a Ruger#1 in 458 Lott, Can I also shoot 458 Win.Mags in this chambering? I read an article that said you could......

Prefered choice would be NOT! Just because it will fit does not mean it is safe.
As a example; a .222 will chamber and fire in a .223. Has been done many times.
Is best to be on the "safe" side of the fence here.

You can shoot the 458 Winchester in a 458 Lott chamber. Basically the Lott is a lengthened 458 Winchester. I wouldn't do this as common practice, though, you will probably induce some chamber wear.

Like shooting 38 specials in a 357 magnum.

Dogman,
I read the same thing, and one of the selling points of the Lott is supposedly that in far away places, 458 Win Mag ammo is fairly common and can be used if you have your Lott and are short of ammo. I have neither so I'm just conveying what I read.

I liken it to shooting 44 special in 44 mag....you just have to worry about a fouled chamber eventually.

Yes, you can. The cases are the same, except that the .458 Lott is 0.3 inches longer. It's like firing a .38 Special in a .357 magnum. A number of sources suggest firing the .458 Win Mag in .458 Lott rifles as a way of getting practice with a bit less recoil and lower cost.

The Lott is the 375H&H blown out straight. Sounds like a good handloading project. You could go varminting and shoot reduced loads at will (or anything else you desire). Be better then carbon buildup from the 458win loads.
