I'm not sure which topic to put this under, so I'll go with the General Discussion.

I was intrigued by the introduction by S&W of their new .460 S&W mag., and actually fondled one of the new revolvers at a Sportsman's show. Since I don't have an extra $1200 laying around for one of the new cannons, I went one better and ordered a custom rifle barrel in that caliber from Bullberry.
I got some brass from Starline and the dies from Midway, but there seems to be too many choices of bullets available!

BTW, the photos in all the gun magazines don't do the size of this cartridge justice. Think: a .45-70 revolver!

I can shoot .45 LC and .454 Casull in the same barrel, so it would just be a matter of how strong my shoulder was feeling that particular day.
Eventually, I'd like to use this round for hunting whitetail at ranges from 25 - 150 yards.

I'd be interested in hearing some comments about bullet selection -- including cast. Bullets are in the .452 size class.

-Thanks

In reading my post over I realized I didn't mention that the barrel I ordered was for an T/C Encore.

I've gone to almost all blackpowder loads for the 45LC but can tell you the 255gr & 300gr Lee cast work very well in the .452 bores. Didn't see any advantage to having the GC on the 300gr so I removed the step in the mold and they drop around 303gr with WW alloy. I do prefer the 255gr in this cartridge for BP loads but the 300 did nicely with nitro loads especially in the rifle. Load tuning is probably going to be your biggest ill, all my 45LC's seem to be pretty fussy on powder selection, not so much on velocity but actual powder type. I never found a single load for Unique that any of the 45's liked so keep this in mind when developing a load.

The Speer 250gr Gold Dot bullets also performed very well but the exact load I used for these escapes me off hand and my book is not handy either. I think I was using Blue Dot or Herco but can't say for sure.
