I recently obtained a Model B78 Browing single shot in 30-06 with a round barrel. I am planning to shoot lead bullets with it and need to know how to check the tightness of the buttstock to the receiver. The Rubber butt plate has no holes for mounting screws and the pistol grip cap apparently has no way to remove it. Before I screw this up can someone tell me how to get to the bolt that holds the stock on the receiver? Thanks for the help.

Poke around near the ends of the pad with a small screwdriver or geometry compass point and see if you can find tiny slits in the rubber. If you find them, there's screws underneath. The next trick is to figure out what type of head they have. I'd try a Philips first. A little soap lubes the screwdriver shaft so you don't mark the pad.
Good luck

Thanks Jack. I wanted to make sure before I went poking around in there. I assume the stock has the normal hole with a bolt up inside it. Thanks again Catch
Often, if you press your thumb down on the recoil pad, maintain pressure, then slide your thumb towards the top or bottom of the pad, you'll expose the slits in the recoil pad over the screw when your thumb passes over the slits.
Hard to describe, but you'll find it easy to do....
Then follow Jack M's good advise about how to use the screwdriver.
