I am a left hand shooter interested in a Ruger #1
Is this really an ambidextrious rifle or is there some cast in the stock?
I have heard various comments on just how accurite this rifle is
any comments

No cast-off to the stock. You can shoot it just like any levergun.

Not a problem with the accuracy unless you need groups under 1 inch, even then with a littel tuning it will do better. It's the most accurate Single Shot with a two piece stock that you can buy. But please don't forget, it's not a bolt action.

Welcome to the forum john. I spent a lot of years kinda wanting a #1. I've been a bolt action fan all of my life and a few years ago I found one when I happened to have some money to spare.

Mine is a #1B in 243 Winchester and it was built in 1979 according to the Ruger Website.

this gun has had nothing done to it except the trigger adjusted to three pounds. I mostly use this gun for coyotes and squirrels out here in Idaho.

I shoot a Nosler 55 grain bullet at 3900 fps and it takes yotes apart and just obliterates ground squirrels. After some fussing with loads I get one inch to one and one quarter inch five shot groups with this gun. It won't outshoot my sons Rem 700 VLS 243 heavy barrel, but it's as accurate as I can shoot anymore and just great to carry and shoot.

There is no cast off so it is excellent for right or left hand folks. I know several folks that shoot the 1V and they are mostly more accurate than my 1B.

You will find more accuracy with a bolt action, but the #1 is a nice gun and I'm not a big Ruger fan. From friends with new ones I've been told that the adjustable trigger is not and they have replaced them with either the kepplinger single sets or the moys trigger from Brownells.

Here is a pix of mine.

I've got a target with 3 shots at 200yds into 13/16" (handloaded). Standard 1S in '06. It was probably a lucky and unusual day, but they can shoot plenty good if they want to. I don't own a bolt gun that can do that.

For a hunting arm, their compactness is nice in the field.

I did put in a trigger kit and hammer and loosened the forearm screw.

My '78 vintage 375 H@H is super accurate ..
If you get a shoulder thumper like the 375 , put a Sims pad on it , best 30 bux you'll spend on it ..
Some vertical stringing may occur in the smaller calibers , forearm pressure tinkering will help this ,, just snug pressure on the screw ..
Somewhere around'82 the trigger was changed from a three screw adjustment to a two screw adjustment , pull , creep and backlash , think its pull and creep now ..

Jack,
I think the change from three screw to two screw was 1980, it is now just pull and over travel.

I know what your saying Jack, if you like it there's no reason to change it, ever.

As far as the dates go, a shooter could care less, a Collector would go nuts if it did not have
the correct trigger or parts for the time period the gun was built.
Just trying to keep the collectors happy.

Collectors ?? Yeah , I've heard of them , buyers , not shooters ...
Course at one time '55,'56 and '57 chevies weren't collectors either ..

Now a days some collectors seem to think that any # 1 that has a red pad on it is something
special.
