Howdy-
I am new to predator hunting (and to this forum), and have several questions, but I need this one answered first. I want to build/assemble a custom varmint gun. But because of a health problem (Rheumatoid Arthritis) I have decided that there are only two reasonable choices. A single shot pistol with a thumbhole stock, or a Ruger No. 1 single shot rifle with a left hand thumbhole stock. For now, my question will pertain to the rifle.

Since I'll be using a custom barrel and a custom stock, I will need the part to which the barrel & stock attaches. Problem is, I don't know what that part is called, nor where to find one. Could someone please tell me the part name so I will then know what to ask for while searching for this?

Thanks much,
Ron

What you want is an "action". an action with a barrel and no stock is a "barreled action". I think Brownells sells Ruger #1 barreled actions. It might be cheaper to buy a used complete rifle and have a new stock put on.

KenK -
That's what I needed to know! I'm going to search around for a few weeks and see if I can find the Ruger No. 1 'action'. If not, then I will take your advice and look for a used gun to modify.
Thanks for your help!

With the barreled actions costing from $633 to $775 at Brownells, a used rifle may be the route to go. Or choose a barreled action in the chambering you want, if available. Rebarreling a Number One is more costly than rebarreling a bolt action.

Hello Mr. Diem - : )
I had planned to purchase a 'Re-barrel' from E.A. Brown Co. (TC Custom Shop) to install on the receiver. But I realize that finding that receiver may be a little difficult. I'm going to search for awhile, but if I can't find it, I will consider your advice.
Thanks much,
Ron

The best way to go is get a used rifle and have a smith put on a barrel and a stock to your requirements. You can't normally buy just the action.

Here is a fella that does good barrel work on #1's. Check out there site.

Good luck on your search and building a new rifle.

Thanks Bob for the advice. If I don't track down a No. 1 action, then I believe that the used gun route is the way to go. Then I'll just add the custom parts later.
Talk to ya later.

Iowaloha Thunder,
I have seen some pretty shot out barrels in the gun shops around here. Most are in the "hot/ fast varmit calibers. Some have had pretty nice wood.
People tend to sell them rather than bring them back. This is the type of gun you are looking for.

Hey Cheezywan -
Iowaloha! (I like that)

I agree that I will probably have to get a 'worn out' Ruger No. 1 and then have it rebarreled, and install a left hand thumbhole stock, which is mandatory.

If you should ever come across a 'shot out' Ruger No. 1, please let me know.
I'm going to start posting some want ads on several hunting/gun forums soon to see if I can track down one of these.

Thanks much,
Ron
