I just read Stanton  Marshall's High Cascade buck hunt story. What a funny story. He is a great writer and I look forward to reading all of them. I live in Oregon , but have never been  to a High Cascade buck hunt. I hunt the East end behide Mt. Hood near Dufur Ore. I tried the Coast range once but it was the most ungodly brush to get through that I  made a vow never to try it again! It is dark as almost the night when you get into the forest and you have to mark a trail every 20 yards or less. It is like a rain forest. I stopped in to a local Mom and Pop store and struck up a conversation about my plight and asked how any one was supposed to hunt this country. He looked at me with a smile and said that you hunt just outside the clear cuts about 100 yards and try to find a deer trail and then just park yourself. I asked if it worked and he pointed to the wall where there  were several Elk heads and bucks heads on the wall. I then asked where any good clear cuts were and he just looked at me and said " Happy Hunting".

You owe it to yourself to apply for one of the early High Cascade Buck Hunt tags!  It is a truly great hunting opportunity.   Most people who draw these tags hunt off of roads out of their pickups!  They drive the roads around Diamond Lake, and all those roads off of Hwy 58, and Gov't camp.   Get off the roads, and into some of the more accessable wilderness areas and you'll literally have the place to yourself!   The college kids are back in school as are high school kids, and most tourist/sightseers aren't into frosty mornings in the high country!

I particularly cherished the opportunities I had to make this special hunt those years I was drawn.

Enjoy!

God Bless,

Marshall

Sounds like a great idea. I'll have to try that next year as I have a tag put in for the Whiteriver area for this year. I love the Diamond Lake Area and would like to give it a try.  You can bet that I will be shooting one of you 170 gr bullets for my 308 Win and my daughter's with your 160 gr. FN in her 30-30. Thanks for the information.
