Hey guys, went to reload some .44 special cowboy loads today, and as I was resizing/decapping, I notice that every time I punched a primer out, the anvil seperated from the cup, never seen this before! Is this normal? The brass is winchester, primers are cci 300, and the case has been reloaded 7 times. Any thoughts would be great!
thanks,

Some anvils fall out, some don't, and after 38 years of reloading, I can't say it means anything. Don't worry about it.

Like jack said, it's not a problem...some primers do that. Wait until you get one that's corroded to the pocket and your priming punch leaves the side-wall of the primer in place (like a bushing), then you cuss and fuss.

Had a Winchester primer fresh out of the box that was missing the anvil. First time in almost 40 years of reloading. Picked up a used anvil that had separated from the cup and put it into the new primer. It went bang at the range like all the others.
Not unusal anymore to have an anvil fall out of the primer cup when decapping. Just a niusance as they get lost in my carpeting.
Used the separated anvils/cups to explain to my grandson (age 6) what made the cartridge go "bang". He got the concept and treats primers with respect now when we reload together.

vanbuzen9 - You've got nothing to worry about like everyone's stated already. I've been on a reloading spree the last few weekends and noticed the same things you did. It seems that when I was de-priming Remington and Federal factory loaded cases the primers would drop out whole for the most part with one coming apart once in a while. When I de-primed my reloads using the CCI 200 primers almost all of them fell apart into the primer catcher. Makes ya wonder sometimes but as long as they go bang I'll keep using them. :) CEJ..

The sequel to this story is, a few hundred primers later, out of the same box of 1K I tried to seat a primer and it wouldn't seat flush. I had to decap it and as I checked it out everything looked great. Then, I noticed that it was double anviled. Yes, one on top of another and almost unnoticeable. Had this primer and the one without the anvil been side-by-side, I coulda used the new anvil. Life is full of unexpected surprises. :)
