View Full Version : Where did all the 7.62x39 ammo go?

From what everyone is telling me the war in Iraq has consumed the worlds supply of 7.62x39 ammo (at least the cheap stuff like wolf, silver bear, etc.). Does anyone know who has 7.62 in stock that is not asking an arm and a leg for it?

I got a quote on a 1,000 rounds of mil spec ammo today $266 and change!!!!

Also, is there a way to tell if ammo is corrosive by looking at the ammo itself? I had a guy wanting to sell me some 7.62 that was a mix-match of shells. i aked him if it was corrosive and he did not know. If there is a way to tell if it is non-corrosive i am going to buy it.

Buy it.

Is getting a bit harder to find...and am wondering why. It's not that the Russians are heavily into the Iran/Afgan war or that the US miltiary uses a lot of 7.62X39. Could be that the factories that made 7.62X39 in Russia got some contracts for other things what bumped 7.62X39 production off-line for a time.

In short...i don't know why there isn't more of it on the market but haven't had any problems shooting corrosive ammo; you just clean afterwards with either milspec. bore cleaner or plain old hot water wash, then clean as normal.

The price for 7.62x39mm ammo around around here is almost twice what it was just several months ago. I recently was at a gun show and asked one of the dealers why it was so high. He said that the domestic ammo manufacturers have been lobbying the government to limit the importation of the cheap stuff. I don't know if it's true or not, but that was the reason he gave.

By the heaps and mounds of spent cheap steel cased 7.62x39 that gets scattered all over our gunrange, I'd have to say there's no real shortage of the stuff around here! :(

Find a mail order place that has case lots of it for sale.

Now I realize that part of Central Europe is in the middle of a serious cold snap (are counting the dead daily now..but it's partly related to lack of fuel oil) and perhaps there are some delays in shipping for other reasons, but the big ammo wholesellers are out of stock.

I did have a couple of spam-cans of ammo, but sold it along with that salvaged SKS....without a gun to shot it in, haven't been following the ammo supply.

Its starting to trickle back in. We should have a good supply soon.

With the price of iron, steel & fuel sky high, don't expect to find any more cheap ammo especially that ammo with steel cases & bullets. Transport costs way up too so everything is going to follow suit. Also, a lot of ammo is delayed during import with the new homeland security reg's. Took almost 3 months waiting on some 7.62x25 S&B to get cleared last year.

Is some romanian 7.62X25 on the way in...probably at resonable prices.

But the 7.62X39 has me stumped....are other cailbers still offered cheaply and you'd think that if it was production costs that would be the same fro anything using primers, bullets, cases, and powder. It's not...it's a one caliber shortage.

It's not a caliber I'm likely to have a need for...not real high on my "must buy" list...just interresting that it seems to be MIA.

It would seem with the ones I find at my range and the ones all over the US, there wouldn't be many left over seas either, sure hope you guys buy them all and make any rifle made for them obsolete, except for the ranch rifle, but then owners of a ruger most likely don't shoot the the cheapy steel ones anyway.

And this is a good thing how?

Considering the general accuracy of Mini's, the cheap stuff blams away at the range just fine...and that's what 90% of the mini-shooters seem to do, just rip through magazines with barely a thought to the sights, raining empty cases on the rest of us trying to do something more serious.

... raining empty cases on the rest of us trying to do something more serious.

It is pretty distracting to have an empty !!!HOT!!! case go down the neck of your shirt.

On some of the other forums, they're saying the Russians have been shipping boat loads of 7.62x39 to the Iraqi coalition forces for house cleaning. Don't know if this is true either...

I was at a gun show in N.E. Ohio on Saturday. No 7.62X39mm in any quantity. Too bad to, I'm in need of some for my SKS. I did however get a cool stock for it that has a pistol grip and a CAR style colapsing butt. It did require a "bit" of fitting.

Words from an insider (http://www.eckernet.com/2006/02/worldwide_762x39_ammo_shortage.html):
"We are working on it. Stockpiles are down due to the war and increased training. My company is the largest producer of small caliber ammunition in the world and we are working on ramping up production. However, we are constrained by the fact that our main production facility is running on 1940's era technology and machinery."

I've been told this person is reliable, and does infact work for an ammunition company. So with any luck we will see the ammo coming back soon... until then we may have to spare a TV, or watermelon.

I just places and order for 1,000 rounds of Wolf HP and FMJ from sportsmans guide. The FMJ will not be availalbe until April, BUT the HP are scheduled to availalbe Feb. 26th.

They have the best price I can find and Feb. 26th ain't that bad.

1,000 round cases are $95 + $5 for being heavy + S&H

I saw that... It'll be interesting to see if they can make that 2/26th date.. I'm not so desprite for rounds that I need to buy now, but by the end of the summer, I'll need them for sure... Let us know if they make that date or not.

I called sportsmans guide about 7.62x39 and they told me that the ammo should be in sometime in May with no definate dates. So i then called century arms ( the guys who import the stuff) and they told me it was all going over to Iraq because we r giving the Iraqis control again (see how long that lasts) but they had no idea when they would be getting 7.62x39 back .

Good thing I stocked up at SG while the 123gr HP was selling for 60 bucks a can...

I was reading somewhere, there was a boat load (literally), on its way over.

Dont feel bad guys. The 5.56 military ammo is gone too, and the new brass casing Wolf is sold out everywhere. I got a case of 1000 steel cased Wolf from Sportsmans Guide.

Ammoman.com did have some 7.62 ammo in bulk lots.

I've got 500 pieces of new Winchester 7.62x39 brass. Can't seem to sell it at any reasonable price...so things must not be so bad that people are reloading.

If I did not already have a thousand or so pieces that have been fired I would use it myself.

At least reloading gets folks to pick up their brass. As kdub mentioned, the steel cased ammo gets left on the ground and makes for a mess on the range.

As far as picking up empty steel cases, it's really a lot easier than picking up brass. Stop by a home center, hardware store, etc. that caters to carpenters, roofers, etc. You can get a long bar magnet with a cord attached, like the roofers use to pick up nails in a yard. After a few quick passes around, you've got'm all. :)
