With Winchesters of any kind becoming impossible to come by these days I've rerouted my way of thinking about my next rifle. Rather than go lever action (I know I could get a Marlin and that's not been ruled out yet) I'm toying with the idea of starting up a selection of single shots. I've had a Ruger #1 that was about as accurate as a 6 year old with a sling shot and a friend of mine is going the T.C. Encore route . Well, me being me I have to be differant.
I've noticed several different threads on H&R single shots and I'm wondering if they are any good and what kind of accuracy I can expect especially from the Buffalo Classic in 45-70 or the Target Model rifle in 38-55.
Thanks in advance
RJ

You won't be disappointed with the 45-70 BC, but the .38-55 Target can be tough to get to shoot accurately if you want to shoot cast bullets, jacketed shoot well enough. The .38-55 suffers from an oversize bore and an undersize chamber neck that presents a problem with cast bullets, which need to be as large as .379"-.380" to shoot well. Having the chamber neck reamed slightly is the best cure. The BC is a great rifle, shoots all ammo pretty well to exceptional, from mild to wild, black powder or smokeless.

So Lyman's 457124 should be a good bullet choice for the H&R BC? I've already got one that Dad had for his trapdoor Springfield.

Yup, I cast a bunch of them up, haven't shot em yet, but the fellas at Graybeard suggested it as one of the good ones, shoot it as cast, don't resize it smaller. Keep the velocity below 1600 fps or so and it should do great.

Thanks Wrongtarget. I dug out the old girl and will have to do a bit of polishing with some 000 steal wool to get a very fine mist of rust off her but she's still very serviceable. I cast a bunch for my brother in law 8-9 years ago and the gun oil I put on got rubbed off or something.
Where's the monicker "Wrongtarget" come from if I may be so bold??

Seems to me I remember doing the same thing back in '84 at the Bullhook Bottoms Rendezvous in Havre MT. There musta been 100 shooters lined up and the targets were inches apart. After the second volley it was hard to see the targets thru all the smoke and I wasn't the only one not shooting at his own target!!! We started over and split the shooters into 2 groups with your shooter number in red on the target. Was great fun. Got to meet Jim Bridger (for real, got to see his drivers licence)

I really miss the rondys and all the good people that participate, our club met on private property the land owner died, our club died with him in '98 when his family didn't want us shooting there anymore. Wy'east Mountain men are no more...

Yup used tuh be gatherins' all over Montaney a few years back. Was a big one in Virginny City up Alder Gulch. Smack in the middle of tourist season. We wuz only 'loud one tourist per tag. That's where I bulged the barrel on my TC Hawken .50 cal. Didn't get the ball seated down on the powder and ruint the rest of my day.
My son has been going to the Rendezvous at Fort Bridger the last 3-4 years. I'm not sure if they have a shoot anymore or not.

Seems like it happens to all of us at sometime or another, Matt Emmons crossed fired in the finials at the olympics and it cost him the gold. All he had to score was a 6 to win.

Got to put my hands on the 38-55 the other day and looked her over real close. Noticed right off that the stock where it meets the reciever is "oversized", sticks out past the metal and looks like heck Can a guy who's creative fix this or is it better left alone. Being a fan of 788's and mules I can handle ugly but this is ridculous.
Also noticed the riflings are a bit on the shallow side on the 38-55 target model. Is this to be expected on the Buffalo classic as well?
Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I buy the 45-70.
