Jim, this is a real nice rifle. I opted, in 1956, to put a marbles tang sight on my 1956 Mountie. Used it for shooting Jack Rabbits in SD. Got 25$ for each unskinned. The 1956 Mounties had a S prefix to the SN. Mine is S101xx. Received it for Christmas from my parents. Since I collect Winchester Pump and Auto .22s I have not shot the Marlin, but you have encouraged me to dust it off for this weekend. Thanks.

my sn is prefixed with a "N", when you go to the marlin site it shows that "N" was 1956. the second year of the micro grooved barrel. rimfirecentral has the year of mfr. stickied in the marlin section.
here ya go, looks like yours was a 1959 or 58
All Marlin Qwners:
Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number; this coding only applies to serialized rifles:
1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-58-R
1958-59-S
1960 (August)-1961-U
1961 (August)-1962-V
1963-W
1964-Y,-Z
1965-AA
1966-AB
1967-AC
1968-AD, -68
1969-69
1970-70
1971-71
1972-72
Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].
For Marlin Rimfire Rifles [non-serialized]:
From 1962 thru 1968 Marlins rimfire rifles (other than the 39 series lever actions) used a two letter date code that was stamped on the barrel. This date code is different than the one already listed, as Marlin rimfire rifles (other than the model 39 series) did not have a serial numbers until required to by Law after 1968. The first letter of the date code represented the month of manufacture while the second letter indicated the year. This date code was usually stamped on the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver. The first letter of the date code is as follows:
A = Jan.
B = Feb.
C = Mar.
D = Apr.
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = Aug.
I = Sep.
J = Oct.
K = Nov.
L = Dec.
The second letter of the date code is as follows:
F = 1962
G = 1963
H = 1964
I = 1965
J = 1966
K = 1967
L = 1968
So a date code of "JK" would indicate that rifle was made in October of 1967.
The above "codes" provided by RFC User "plinker Tom".

Jim, My Mountie indeed has a N prefix, or a 1956 Serial Number. Don't know why I said S. I do remember getting it theyear I graduated from High School, which was 56. in any event, I now have 3- 1972 to 1974 Winchester 9422s and 22Ms to go with the Marlin lever. It will be fun to compare.

well my mounty may be short lived. i despertly want to build a ruger m77/22 in either .22wrm or .17wrm. i just don't have the funds to do it. i plan on getting a all weather s.s. action or complete gun, then getting the new green mountain s.s. fluted sporter barrel for it (20"). i have already aquired a stock for it. i had a all weather in .22lr and took it out of the butt ugly stock and placed it into a new factory walnut stock. it looks great. i have another walnut stock for the wrm when i get it. anyway i may end up posting my mounty for trade or forsale this spring. i realy love lever rifles and this one shoots well but i have realy fallen for these s.s. actions in walnut rifles and they are tack drivers. time will tell. i have a target sear on the rim fire and it is down to around 2lb. i easily got sub 1/2" groups at 50 yds with it. have not had it out to 100 yds yet and have not bedded it yet.

Jim H,
How's it going, just found this site today and saw your rifle. I too have a '56 Mountie. I am trying to find out where the front swivel mounted for a strap as mine does not have one. If you could shed some light on this for me I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Mike,
I think Marlin has a few versions of the forarm tips.
My Marlin TDS has the Forarm Tip without the Swivel stud or sling loop. My 39A and newly aquired 39A Mountie (1965) both have the Sling loops.

The newer 39A's I've seen have a Swivel Stud Forend Tips are available at Brownells.com for around $15.
