View Full Version : At my wit's end with this 9422M

Last fall, I bought a beautiful 9422M Yellowboy at a gun show. Got it home, only to find that it won't fire consistently. Seems the bolt carrier isn't closing all the way. More often than not, it sticks out the back just a bit. If you push on it with your thumb to seat it, the rifle fires great. If you don't, then it fires maybe half the time - looks like the bolt sticking out just a tad takes enough off of the hammer impact to keep it from setting the primer off.
So I figure it was a mismachined bolt carrier. Ordered a new one from Brownells, put it on today, and darned if it doesn't do exactly the same thing!
Anyone have this problem, and know what I have to replace to get it fixed? A pity, this is otherwise a magnificent rifle.

Does this gun have the rebounding hammer? If so, that might be the cause if the rebounding of the hammer is not letting the hammer hit hard enough before it returns. Maybe the spring is too stiff, or the whole action needs a good cleaning and oiled. You say its a 9422 Yellowboy?? You sure its not a Henry Yellowboy? I don't remember Winchester making a Yellowboy.

Right about the rebound hammer... thinking of Marlin

Yep, definitely a Winchester. No rebounding hammer, at least not by design. The bolt closes all the way, but the bolt carrier does not, sticks out maybe 1/8", just enough to take impact off of the hammer.
I have a Marlin 39TDS with the rebounding hammer - had a similar misfire with it. Ten minutes with a grinder fixed that. This one is going to take a bit more work.

I had a 9422 where the bolt closed all the way and the carrier did not and had no problems with it. I am wondering if the extractor is lining up with the slot on the barrel when closed. If that is ok, sounds like a headspacing problem.

John,
Sorry, I didn't tear into mine last night. However, I was just looking at the owners manual on line (6 M not for dailup!!). and I think the part you're callin the "bolt carrier" they call the Bolt sllide??
I'm no expert here (and I really wish I'd taken mine down) but I think the lever closes the Breech Bolt (using same terms as the manual) and the bolt carrier gets pulled along. So, I'd inspect the relation ship of these two parts while out of the gun...
Sorry not better help, may have time to night at look at mine

That's correct - it's the black piece that's behind the bolt. A pin that goes through the bolt engages a ramp on this piece, and supposedly pulls it shut when the bolt closes. In my case, it's just not closing enough.
Guess I will have to braze a piece of metal on that ramp to get the bolt slide to be pushed forward - doesn't sound like anyone else has this problem.

Ask this in the gunsmithing section and see what you get, or if any of the moderators think it would be best, maybe they will move it there for you. Might get a little better info for your problem there.

Well, I finally isolated the problem. Ordered a new bolt slide from Brownells, put it on, and the same thing happened.
It appears that the hole for the pin that engages the bolt slide was misdrilled. Ordered a new bolt, and that fixed it.
