View Full Version : Winchester 9422
I recently bought a Winchester 9422 and this being my first repeating rifle I am wondering if it matters if it gets dry fired from time to time. The reason I am asking is because I don't always notice when the magazine is empty and thus have dry fired it several times already. I read a thread the other day that on a Marlin 39A this is a no-no and I am just wondering if it is the same for the Winchester? I thank you for any replies on this issue. Rod W

Dryfiring rimfires usually isn't recommended as the firing pin can hit the end of the barrel in many designs. This can peen the entrance to the chamber enough to make chambering a cartridge difficult. I don't know the details of the 9422.

I believe it is not a good idea to dry fire the 9422. The only rimfire I know of that is ok to dry fire is the Anschutz. There may be others but do not recall right now.

The others are right. Don't dry fire it. Each firing pin strike will hit the edge of the chamber and raise the burr that was mentioned. The Taurus 62 guns are another one that is OK to dry fire but only if you engage the funky safety on top of the bolt. That takes the firing pin off line so it cant strike the round or the chamber. In just about everything else it is an issue. To avoid dry firing after the last round you are just going to have to count or at least look for a round as you are getting near the end of what you loaded in the magazine. If you ever do get a chamber burr brownells has a tool to roll the displaced metal back into place. A good rimfire gunsmith will have one and the job only takes a few minutes.
