Hi, its me again, and I want to buy a ligh semi auto rilfe for target/fun shooting and home defence. I want to buy an rilfe in 223 remington or 6,8 mm spc.
ps: the hd thing is more thertical, because I am from austria and in my country the crime rate is not so hight, and I will use my rilfe primerly for target/fun shooting.
What do you thin, which of the meinteoned calibers would be the better choice for sd, the 223 remington or the new 6,8 mm spc,?

Recently read that the military interest in the 6.8 has waned, and ammo is hard to come by. Maybe a rumor, and not much of a problem for a dedicated handloader, but .223 is and will be easy to come by.

If I was going to buy a weapon for home defense without already having several guns I would buy a reliable pump shotgun. You can get decent ones for less than $200.Then you can get the rifle than suits your rifle needs.20 gauge is powerful enough for home defense.
For target/fun shooting the standard 5.56 would be my pick, hands down. It is inexpensive to shoot, has virtually zero recoil in the AR platform, and can be exceptionally accurate. Does not hurt it's cause that ammo is very easy to come by, here in the US at least.
Do you do any hunting in Austria? What type of hunting is common there?

In your country, I would get a rifle chambered in 5.56 Nato. This way if surplus ammo is available, you can shoot both .223 and 5.56. It doesn't work the other way though. I love plinking w/ 5.56 surplus ammo, accurate and cheap. I hand load for varmints. Are AR type rifles available? What rifle do you have in mind? JP

For Small game, target, I would say a Bushmaster. If you can find a DCM you can also compete in high power competition. I like the A2 design personally.

V-Max bullets
If you buy an AR-15 type rifle that has a quick twist barrel 1-7", or 1-8" you will likely get better accuracy from the SS109 ammunition (US M855 I believe) that shoots a longer bullet that is about 62 grs. Depending on the laws in your country you might not be able to get it as all of I have purchased has been armor piercing...but it does shoot pretty good in my AR with the 1-7" twist.

I'd get a fairly short barrelled pump shotgun for home defense and a .223 for recreational shooting due to cheap ammo availability.

I'd recommend a Remington 870 in 12/20 gauge. They are very popular and have a wide range of accessories. That or take a Mossberg 500 or a Maverick 88 for the same reason. If your lookin for price go with the last two.

Well strictly for home defense I like my Model 870 20 Ga. It is short, light and quick. 3" loads with #4 Buck is brutal at the ranges necessary. Lighter shot might be better if shooting through drywall, flex-board, siding and hitting friendlies is a concern. In-doors even #6 bird shot will do the trick. See the VPs friend and how a single shot from a little 28Ga and 7 1/2 shot treated him.
I have 12 Ga pumps as well, but I just like the way the 20 handles.

For SD the 6.8 SPC was designed by my unit for dropping bad guys better than the 5.56mm and still work within the AR dimeters. However, ammo is still hard to find. I would have no problems using my AR with BH 77gr BTHP for SD use since that's what I've carried for three rotations to Iraq (along with a NM M14 and FN/FAL Para both with M118 LR Match). Shotguns are good for indoor shooting against single or low multiple targets. Target rich enviroments are best served with a high capacity, low recoiling, fast target acquiring weapon (ie AR carbine)

I will add my 2 cents worth here, which is probably overpriced.
For home defence I would have to go with the shotgun, simply to eliminate overpenetration. As for shot size, there are many different opinions, but for me I use BB or #2, even though anyone getting hit by 1 to 1 1/4 oz of anything at household distance is going to be hurting.
I have an Armalite A2, I think they are heavier made than other AR types. I agree with an earlier post about the A2 configuration. If you want a A4 type platform with all the bells and whistles you can put on one, be my guest, they are fun. I just like simple. Given the parameters you stated, go with the shotgun and the A2 in whatever brand. You can't go wrong.
Of course this is just my opinion. Good luck.

Please save your money, get an AR, but find a nice side by side, or pump shotgun. Europe, Russia, & Turkey all make Great guns!. Will save you $!!!
Turkey produces some decent semi auto's also!

You can get a satin 870 at Wally for around $225 with choke tubes. Hard to save much more than that. It's the real thing too. Just no a gloss finish.
