Hi All, New to Shooters Forum.

I'm thinking putting together a rifle for long range target shooting, maybe coyotes. I have a Howa 1500 in 300 Win Mag. Does the Howa action and/or caliber have potential or should I go find a something else to start with?

Welcome to the board, plugcutt - hope you enjoy your stay here and will join us in the discussions on the many forums here.

The Howa is a fine bolt gun and the .300WM is noted for longer range accuracy.

Guess what we need to do here is define "long range". To what ranges are you referring to?

I had a S&W 1500 years ago. Same design and factory. One of the most accurate rifles I ever had. I am a Mauser action guy (Win Model 70, Ruger M77), but there is nothing wrong with the 1500 as far as push feed actions go.

most of the long range shooters I know are using Remington action based rifles.

i'd look at the Rem' VLS and some of their other Model 700's to start. Rem's website is a little mixed-up at one point re: those rifles, but you'll figure out what you're looking at. A VLS' is a great platform to start with, and I wouldn't modify it if I started winning competitions w/it
take care, ss'
