View Full Version : Did I buy bad ammo?

Between yesterday and today I fired my 10/22 target rifle for the first time. I shot about 300 rounds between the two days.

Toward the end of today I started to get some jams from the 10-shot rotary magazines.

Not a big deal. I put another round into the mag and it was fine...just didn't want to advance the next round without some attention.

The ammo I bought was a good price....but maybe I bought crap?

It is Remington -22 lr brass-plated hollow points. 525 Golden Bullet.

500 of them for 8.99.

I have heard good things about CCI minimags so I will get them next but for now....I have two unopened 500 round boxes to use or throw away if the Rimington is bad. :-(

I cleaned the gun when I got home and my god it was dirty in the action. :-(

Thoughts?

I would guess the rifle was too dirty to cycle reliably. After the cleaning, it should perform fine, though it may not like that particular ammo. As for the ammo being "bad", probably not, but if your rifle doesn't shoot it well enough to suit your needs, it is kind of aggravating, isn't it?

I like CCI's the best. I have a 10/22 that I have shot over 1000 rounds through without cleaning and has never jammed on me. Tey CCI's or Winchester ammo. I also had a cousin that had a 77/22 and the mag jammed because the spring was about two winds too weak. After the adjustment, problem went away. Try some CCI's and see how it does.

I have found that Wolf ammo is very dirty. It will cause you many problems. Never buy Wolf ammo.

So as long as I keep things clean I should be able to burn throuhg the last 1200 or so rounds of that Remington stuff? No lasting harm from dirty ammo other than lots of cleaning right?

All you can do is clean it a see how many you can get out of it without a problem. I don't shoot the Remingtons in mine, but you do need to keep a .22 auto clean, more so than a bolt gun.

Sometimes a target barrel with a match chamber will not function well with certian brands of ammo. Using a 45% reamer just take a touch off the edge of the chamber. This has cured most feeding functions in the aftermaket barrels I've worked on.

Another caution is if your barrel has a match chamber it can be ruined by running CCI Stingers thru it. Lots of match chambers are not cut long enough for this longer than normal case.

Yup, the instructions Ruger sent along say to NOT use Stinger ammo.

I will shoot the remaining 1200 Remington rounds and keep cleaning the action and mags as needed.... then switch to CCI minimags

This was your first range session, right?

All semi-autos will need a break in period...so cleaning betweens every so may rounds is probably a good idea.

In fact, i've never understood the people who never clean their 10/22's, or brag about how many rounds they've fired without a cleaning. Proably the same guys, back in high school, that never washed their gym clothes until they stuck to the locker.

ZIs anyone out there going to ake the side that a grit and fouling crusted rifle is somehow better than a clean and well lubed one?

Saturday I shot about 100 rounds. Another 200 or so today. Did not clean after first 100 as I was going again in under 24 hours.

Usually I clean after every range visit :-)

All in all, 3-4 failed loadings from the mags out of 300 rounds is ok with me.

Never said it was a good idea, just mentioned how many went through mine one time without jamming. Also on my next thread, told him to keep any .22 auto clean.

And another thing.... my gym clothes never stuck to my locker..... much

Renthorin,
Give the CCI's a try, but I have a Browning BAR 22 that just hated them and their heavy waxy coating. The Federals worked much better in that particular rifle and may in your Ruger as well.

Edit: Make that American Eagle, which is a Federal product. Beware though, their bricks are 400 rounds, not 500.

Federals are also a good choice, and you are right Shawn about CCI's having a heavier wax than some. Also like was mentioned before.... might need to run a Bentz reamer and give it a little more room.

Sorry..wasn't aimed at you. Just that it seems the only people who brag about how filthy their guns are seem to be 10/22 shooters. Hopfully it's just their 10/22 that they let get that foul; lets assume so anyway.

I had a problem with the Remington's jamming in my rotary clips too. I think it's because of the rough edges around the bullet, but not sure. The mini-mags ran through the clips better but won't group for me??

It does not hurt to strip and clean the mags once in a while also.
