Have a savage lever action passed down from my father who in turn got it from my grand-dad. Grandpa bought it used circa 1918.Serial no. 1907xx Stamped model 1899 on barrel, has a pistol grip and metal butt plate with Savage logo on it.It will dismantle in three pcs. stock and receiver - barrel-and fore stock. Chambered for 250-3000. The safety is located behind the trigger and slides into lever. On top of receiver at very back is small round nub of metal that juts up slightly when rifle's action is worked. Also on side of receiver is cartridge counter of sorts. This site seems to have a wealth of knowledge pouring in and hope some one can shed light on subject. Thanks in advance

I don't understand what you are asking, since you have pretty well described the rifle. The only thing can really be added is the the SN lists put manufacture at 1917 +- a year. It sounds like a very nice early savage with what would be to most of us quite important family provenance.

What you have is a Model 1899 250-3000, they became the 99 G at about SN # 236,000. They really do not have a model designation, like H, F, D. It was the first model the 250 Savage was realeased in. If the rifle has any condition it is worth a pretty penny, I have one and love it. I have a newer 99 A Saddlegun in 250-3000 also, doesn't shoot the lighter bullets as well as my 1899, remember, that 250 will not shoot heavier bullets than 100 grains accurately, and don't use any of the Noslers, they are to long for the rifling, it has a 1:14 twist, the post million serial number 250's have a 1:10 twist. Hope you enjoy it, I have a few pictures of them posted on my web site http://savagela.org The thing that posp up on the back is called the cocking indicator, you can slip close the lever to decock the rifle also, all you have to do is pull the trigger as you pull up on the lever and the action is decocked. Regarding Violator22's post, I have one of those as well in excellent condition, serial #678602. Would like to hear more about what the actual value may be.

I think you emailed me about this. When you are on my web page, which rifle does it look the most like, is it a takedown, with that serial number it could be a G but they didn't go that high if I remember right. Look at you trigger, is it checked or does it have serrated lines on it. Tell me more about the wood. Les

djp57, What you probably have with that high of a Serial number is an EG, they are not a Take-down. They stopped making Take-downs around 400000. The one in the picture is a 1899 Model 250-3000, serial number is 1827XX, it is one of mine. Les
