My favorite supplier for pure lead (well, 99% pure) has raised their prices... $1.50 a pound!!!

That really sucks...

I have been scouring the web and local suppliers...their prices have all gone up lately.

Rumours about about how the Chineese and Indians are buying up all the bulk/supplus/recaimed lead.

I might have to go out and get my last 50 lbs and call it quits for a while.

I have had REALLY good success with my own combination for Lyman #2.

25 lbs of magnum #8 shot
1.66 lbs of 95/5 solder
5 lbs of pure lead

Gives me over 30lbs of EXCELLENT casting alloy for smokeless bullets.

Oh well...

Most base metal and precious metal prices have increased substantially over the past year. Copper, Lead, Zinc, Moly, and Gold have all increased an astronomical amount.

i have a huge bar of linotype i got from the local print shop... i'm thinkin it's over 20# at least... i had a casting session yr before last and i've got several hundred 150 gr. 38 cal. bullets cast and sized and ready to load... i may never use this linotype myself but it should make beautiful hard cast bullets...

It's less about "buying up" than it is about "regulation". Been pushing this issue for quite some time but most all the shooter ignore it as they did the steel shot issue...now it returns to bite us in the @$$.

Since going after our guns didn't get far, the anti's are going after lead claiming environmental contamination & health issues and they are winning this battle hands down just like the anti-hunters did with the steel shot because we choose to sit back and do nothing about it.

The claims of ground water contamination and leaching are based on junk science, the same junk science that causes you to buy special shotguns to shoot steel shot in and pay through the nose for ammo. The same is being done with all you're other guns now and even the NRA is buying into the BS.

In Orange county FL there is a project being started that will cost the taxpayers around $4.5 million dollars. An anti-gun group claims that the sheriffs dept shooting range is contaminating the ground water and demanded it be cleaned up. Politicians ignored the fact based scientific studies and chose to go with a kneejerk reaction, they completely shut down the range that was open to the public as well as law enforcement and it will never re-open again. Now, some yahoo decided that since the shooters are responsible for this alleged contamination, we should pay for the clean-up and he is proposing an additional 4% sales tax on all ammunition statewide.

The same anti-gunners/anti-hunters have suceeded in getting regulations passes in many areas requiring all wholesale and retail lead users to be 100% accountable for all their lead. They must now have all their scrap lead hauled off by a recycler and maintain documentation of how much they purchased and how much was sent for scrap and if the numbers don't match, they can be fined out of business. Recyclers are also being banned from selling lead to anyone except commercial/industrial users which means you can no longer buy lead from many scrap yards and soon this will extend nationwide if we don't get off our @$$es and do something about it.

Latest thing I heard was from an anti-gun group out of Pearland TX who just last week openly said their immediate goal was to get all use of lead banned from all bullets and shot so that hunters would be forced to pay extremely high prices for non-lead hunting bullets and shot. This is the same group that is funding the attacks on shotgun ranges, also using lead contamination as the basis, to require the use of non-lead shot for all shotguns too. Their spokesman went on to say they are trying to get a federal law passed requiring people to have a license in order to purchase powder and limit purchases to no more than 3 pounds per year and have a total possession limit of 5 pounds.

If you want to learn the truth about lead contamination at shooting ranges, there is fact based study published on jpfo.org

Folks still BUY lead??? I haven't bought lead for years. I keep a bucketful of fishing weights handy for friends who trade lead for weights. I ALWAYS come out ahead on the trade.

There's also a high demand for lead due to the war.

Have any of you checked with commercial roofers about buying their salvage lead flashing?

Im just getting back into casting myself and found that my local recycling center sells lead for .25 per pound. You have to pick thru but I was there this morning and most seemed to be pure lead, some that looked to be linotype, and some wheel weights.

I got 400 lbs of the pure lead, $100.00 :D

If you guys need some I could probably get more and certainly do better than $1.50 per pound.
There are also several guys an EBAY that sell lead, usually around a dollar a pound delivered.

I just went to my tire store where I was always able to pick up several lbs of WW but was told the new guy there now sells them for $20 for a 5gal bucket. I reluctantly gave him the $20 and got me a 5 gal bucket. It is heavier than I can pick up but I don't know how many lbs I got. Does anyone have an idea how much 5gal of WW's weigh? Also did I get beat or a good deal?

One heaped 5 gallon pail went 180 lb. Subtract 40 lb for clips and junk, so about 140 lb lead.

That's about 14 cents a pound. I guess that's not too bad. Thanks Jack
