Is he looking for just any mauser action? You can buy mauser 98's or mini mausers (mark 10's ) about anywhere.

The Pat 17 is based on a Mauser action & is very well made in 1913 the British army were developing a new action & going to convert from .303 to .275 (7mm ) But at the out break of hostilities in WW1 this idea was scrapped & the Pat13 became the PAT 14 in .303 . When the US entered the war there was a shortage of Springfields & so the Pat17 evolved from the Pat14 Except in the form of the 30-06 . Most I belive were Eddystones & Winchester but as I have said they are a very strong & reliable action

Have you seen Remingtons website recently? They are making rifles with true mauser type actions again. Made on the Mauser 98 actions.

Remington sporterized them and sold them as the Model 30 until WWII.

The 1917 was/is a great action.....albeit needed sone cleaning up. The sight ears needed taken off and the hump in the trigger group ironed out and the dog-leg bolt handle changed. The action is longer that the 98 or 03 and worked great for the longer belted cases........many converted them to cock on the opening.
There were three makers: Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone (Baldwin Locomotive Works).
Many of the Eddystone had a crack in the reciever where the barrel was screwed in. This could be spotted by applying kerosene and then wiping the action off. The crack would show up. Many custom riflemakers in the 50's thought the Eddystone too brittle and would use only the Remington or Winchester actions........James

Most people take the ears or the whole rear sight off. I want to leave them on and use the old peep. Then use a forward mount for a scout scope in QD rings. I'm thinking of a 400 Whelen and a 9.3 X 64. Two medium calibers with the same basic stock and action. I want the deep magazine, with its length. My 46 Swede in 9.3 X 57 has the cock on close and I think I'm going to like it once I get used to it. Bandito

These folks gave sound advice. these rifles were made by Eddystone (Remington owned the plant), Remington and Winchester. More 1917s were used in WWI than 1903 Springfields. It is common to encounter 1917s with parts marked with an "E", "R" or "W" on the same rifle due to arsenal reworks. All the best...

Here are some neat pictures of my 1917’s in Rem and Win. They are very different from the Mausers(I have a sporterized VZ24 and a custom Interarms Mark X). Serial nos. of some parts of each M1917 do not match, but parts are consistent between Rem & Win. When I got these from my brother they were still heavily laden in cosmoline from several decades of arsenal(?) storage. and required complete disassembly to cleanup. Barrels and all are in excellent shape. I didn’t tackle the Win stock yet as the Rem below. I was going to sporterize the Rem, but know now that they are much higher valued in their original state. By year 2017 they will be highly desired. I’ll be 70 this year, so I’ll have to let them go before then.
