View Full Version : 32/20 or .32 H&R magnum
Which would you rather have in a levergun and why?
My list so far:
32/20 plus...more powerful
.32 magnum plus...cheaper and easier to load for

.32 H&R ! Have been loading for both for 20 years. .32H&R in both a Ruger SS and a S&W m631; .32-20 in a Marlin CL and Colt Army Special. .32 H&R is far easier, less tedious to load in any volume. H&R cases are much more durable, not prone to collapsing the mouth, have less variation in weight, length and strength. The articles about high power .32-20 loading seldom tell you that get new brass every second or third reload. .32-20 is finicky as to accuracy loads, H&R much more tractable. Me? With a listed retail of $327, I'm waiting to see the .32H&R Taurus 62L in the flesh. Now we wait for the opposing view. BOL

Loaded then both...liked them both...but nothing is going to put the 32-20 into deer gun class, so the .32HRM makes more sense.
(Know a lot of rabid 32-20 fans...but lets face it, run to the max., it comes up to about .30carbine ballistics.)
While I surely don't want to get into a "is it a deer gun" debate, some of Taffin's .32 magnum loads (tested with a 10" revolver barrel) start a 100 grain bullet at 1500 fps. That's 500 ft/lbs of energy. Deer gun or not, it's no cap pistol by any means.

Kind of makes my point...that's about what you can get with a 7 1/2".30carbine Blackhawk revolver.
Personally, I like the 32-20...not becasue it's "faster", but becasue it can be loaded just as fast as the .32HRM but do it at less pressure.
Now that would be sweet, a rimmed .30 carbine with .308 barrel in an 1894 Marlin.
I would call it the .32 Maximum Ken.
