If you guys could buy a 7.62 x 54mm mosin-Nagant for 100 bucks in really good condition, except for a damaged stock, which can be fixed, would you. And does anyone have any experience with the rifle.

Arsenal refinished are running from $90-150 and this does not guarantee a good bore only a "servicable" bore. Un-issued are getting very hard to find, lots of fakes being passed as un-issued and most of them ain't worth crap money or shooting wise. (prices reflect getting the works, rifle, bayo, ammo pouches, cleaning kit, sling, ect)

If everything but the stock was in very good to excellent condition, I would say $100 is a fair price, new OEM stocks can be had for around $40-50 shipped or used for around $28-35.

Most important thing is the action, a receiver and bolt in excellent condition can be re-barreled giving you an excellent shooter. Depending on how much you want to get into it will depend on what is the best route to go. Personally, I love these rifles and have spent $120 for one that was perfect except for the bore and spent another $95 getting it re-barreled but she'll do sub-MOA with handloads all day long. Other side of the spectrum, I picked up one at a flea market that looked like crap all covered in crud and banged up but once cleaned she revealed a good bore and does shoot very good even with surplus ammo. Total investment in this one was less than 50 bucks but didn't come with the ammo pouches.

I just picked up an awesome Russian 91/30 laminated stock mosin with an "excellent" bore in rearsenaled condition at Aim Surplus for $99 with accessorie kit too(sling, cleaning stuff, ammo pouch). Its a purdy one too. At Southern Ohio Gun they have a few more mosins too they have a rearsenaled 91/30 in hex and round receivers under $80. I would shop around and get the most bang for your dollar.

It depends which model Mosion Nagant rifle is being considered. The short Model 1944s are selling for less than $100.00 in like new condition. I bought three excellent and original Model 91/30s in the last year and never paid over $100.00 with the bayonet. The key is to find rifles with matching numbers on the receiver, bolt, floorplate and buttplate and not just arsenal restenciled numbers. All the best...

The russian 91/30 laminated stock i just received has all matching numbers but all them i'm sure aren't the same. I think today with the supplies dwindling as we speak the chances of find a all matching numbered gun is less and less I think were lucky to get a bolt that matches the receiver. If we have to have a all matching numbered gun i would look at gun shows, pawn shops and gun shops were your chances are better finding one.

BTW; Even if you look closely at some of the bolts theyare ground off and restamped too. I also think they are rearsenaled for us too for our market. Just becareful the finish still isn't wet. If your looking for a shooter/beater gun that looks good were ok but for a real collectable museum piece look at gun shows, pawn shops and gun shops because some older collectors who have the orginal older shippment of these surplups have the better ones and some are parting with their collections as they get older. I look often at my local gun shop who buys up collections and he just dumps the surplups to get rid of them to get his investment back fast. I got lucky one day he just received some FN49's, SVT-40, AGR 1891 carbine, Peru 7,65mm mauser all from the same collection and i grabbed them up quickly. You just have to stay looking and sooner or later they will show up.

Don't look at forced matched 91/30 or M44 as a piece of cr@p, these are good shooters, head-space has been checked. Even miss-matched 7.62x54r rifles are great. They are not Remichesters! JP

I have an M-44 that is completely mis-matched and had a repair & wrap done on the wrist (very quality repair too) rest of the stock is all banged up, muzzle looks like its coned from cleaning rod wear, overall this one has had a rough life. Didn't expect it to shoot for crap but the first 5 rounds were my cast bullet handloads and when I walked out to the target I hung at 100yds...I took one look and turned around to look at the bench and make sure I fired the beat-to-**** gun... Two inch group about 1" high. Went back and put another five in the same target only to find they mixed quite well with the first five and the both groups combined was 2.375" o/a. Called it "good enough" and she's become my daily companion rifle.

I'm impressed the way some of these guns can shoot. I have seen lately that even modern guns are grouping 1 1/2" right out of the box with new ammo. My 100 yo swede mauser does that too. These old war battle ridden horses still can shoot. We just have to beaware that these are reworked, renumbered, refinished and to sell to us. Even though there not orginal they still can shoot good.
