View Full Version : Expected velocity drop in the 444 Marlin
Hi all
I was wondering if any one knows what velocity drop would be expected in the 444 Marlin using different length barrels?
What can you expect from using load data tested in a 24 in barrel and then using it in a 22 in barrel? And then in a 18.5 in barrel?.
For nearly all the load data I have on hand is for 24 in barrels.I've never seen any for 22 in barrels in the loading manuals.
Is there any load data for the 444 using a 22 inch barrel, using all the bullet weights in the 444?
Thanks for your help
Cheers

I have a 444P with the 18 1/2 barrel and a 444T with the 24" barrel. Using the same load behind a 265-grain bullet gives me 2190 FPS out of the "P" and 2300 FPS out of the "T".

Hi
You reckon using a 22 inch barrel, using your load of a 265 gr bullet doing 2300 fps out of a 24 in barrel, you could or should lose about 60-80 fps?
Would that be around the ball park?cause with the 18.5 inch barrel you have using the same load you lose 110 fps.
I read some where that for every inch of barrel you add or subtract you lose about 50fps per inch,or was it 100 fps?I cannot remember
Do you think a 22 inch barrel is better than a 24 inch for hunting?,like in handling and pointability, what do you think?
I was going to go for the new XLR444 in S/S but I like the blued version better now,the XLR has the 24 in barrel and the blued version has the 22 in barrel.Comments are welcome?
Thanks

I've always heard the loss/gain is about 35 FPS per inch and that is pretty much what my experience has been with these two rifles (P & T). It is also about the same in my 35 Remingtons, a "D" with the 18 1/2" barrel and an "SC" with a 20" barrel.
I was thinking about the 444XLR but now considering just a new 444.

Check Vihtavuoris data on

They use 22 in barrels for their data.
