View Full Version : Only one gun
In sequence to the thread on one gun of each kind, if you had to get rid of all your guns but one, which one would you keep. Would it be a collector gun, a hunting gun, or a CCW? Personally, I have a collector gun, but if I could keep only one, I would keep my CCW, because I think the gun that protects me and my family is my most valuable one. It is a Ruger P97DC. I know that a shotgun would be my choice if it was primitive times, but in todays world, I would choose my CCW, because I would have it available when I needed it. What would your choice be? :)

One Gun? Is it legal to use those words together in a sentence?
What morbid curiosity is this? A man who would ask such a question.... Do seek help.

Mine would be an AR15... long range capability, close quarters capability, lots of ammo supply... you get the drift....

At one time I was actually down to one gun. Kept a 6 inch M19 S&W 357. This gun can be used for just about anything: hunting (with scope), competition, plinking, CCW (with the right holster). Would probably pick a Ruger GP100 today.

OK P97 are you sure your on the right forum? One gun, get out the tar and feathers. A much better question would be one safe full.
Most of the folks that only have one gun arn't shooters and the trusty "onegun" sits in a nightstand by the bed. Most folks that are shooters and hunters main worry is how do I get the "nextgun" past the wife and into the safe.
Lots of us older shooters have figured out once you get past "somanyguns" the wife won't know you've added "anothergun" as she's past the point of knowing "howmany" guns you really have anyway.
If your a hunter and do several types of game, i.e. turkey, elk, deer, varmits and tin cans you really have to have "manyguns" to cover all those different sports. If your a shooter and pursue several different't target games, i.e. small bore, metal targets, pistol/revolver courses your again in the "manyguns" position.
Anyway you see where I'm going. You sure you don't want one of our members closer to you to come over and detox you?
Beware the man with one rifle...he may have other faults.

One gun? I've been there. Wouldn't want to be there again but if all I had was a shotgun I could get by.
One gun only? Remington 870 - 12 gauge. I can do it all with that one gun. Kill game from rabbits to moose, defend the homeland, recreate with clay pigeons.

I logged on this morning and thought maybe our politicians had passed "Brady Bill II"!!! I was ready to get out the shovel and PVC pipe and start burying my extra guns, when I realized it was someone's attempt at an "April Fools" joke early. One gun? I can't bare the thought! :p Kidding aside, the 870 12ga gets my vote with lots of extra barrels and ammo. Regards, Riley

Mine would be our scoped 454 Casul, which can also shoot 45LC: all around, versatile gun.

I don't know why, but I'd be more scared of the guy with one gun than a guy with a dozen.

Guns are like golf clubs in that you need a whole set to be effective. Different shot different club/gun.
Least that's what I tell my wife. Seems to work pretty well.

That would be a very tough question, since like most firearms enthusiasts I have a multitude of shooting interests. I think I would go one of two directions, if I had to cut down to just one firearm:
The most practical would probably be to keep my Browning BPS trap gun, and add a rifled slug barrel and a short upland game/skeet barrel. That would allow me to hunt anything (as long as it wasn't much over 100 yards away), and still be a great defensive gun. Plus, trap and skeet are great fun.
The other option for me would be my Browning 1885 High Wall in .454. It's the gun I enjoy shooting and owning more than any other. Currently I have a receiver rear sight and globe front sight, but I would probably add a scope as well if it was an "only". I would also consider rechambering for .460. Those hot 200 grain SST loads would probably give 2500 - 2700 fps out of the 28 inch barrel, giving me a 300 yard rifle (with a bit of practice - shouldn't be a problem, since this would be my only gun :) ). I could also run bullets up to around 405 grains, able to handle anything on this continent (or probably anywhere, for that matter). Gentle practice loads are easy to develop, and I could probably shoot .410 (or at least cut-down .410) shells as a close-range shotgun option.
Kind of a fun mental exercise. :)
Seems the TC Encore would be the ultimate "one" gun. Rimfire, centerfire, shotgun, rifle, pistol. Can be fitted with about any type of furniture one could desire. Not the most accurate, but typically a very good shooter. Pretty well covers all the bases from .22(or smaller) to 12ga to 416 Rigby to 500 S&W...and pretty much everything in between except the new short fatties. Forgot the simple and reliable part. Ultralight mountain rifle to heavy game rifle to varmint rifle to plinker to target pistol to big game pistol to light shotgun to turkey gun to fowling piece. May not be too pretty but it does have to be THE most versatile firearm I can think of.
Had to edit to add that it can be a muzzle loader in pistol, rifle, and probably shotgun as well. For self defense you only have one shot, but it is large and heavy enough to bludgeon your assailant...and how many .500 S&W's does it take to put down a bad guy for keeps? :)

I can't see just one gun. If thats all I had I think I would just go fishing.
If I did have to pick one, it would be my Anschutz 1416D .22lr. I can feed myself all year with a .22.

Holey Moley!!!!!!!!!!! I thought me asking about having only one of each was crazy! One gun? Well if the decline in society and civilization has gone far enough that I can have only one...I'd keep my Ruger Mini 14. Then like mercmarine said......

The term, "One gun..." ususally refers to;
One of these, one of those, one of those and one of them... so on and etcetera.
The idea expressed by the OP is one that is utterly alien to me. :)
That being said. mercmarine has it right. I'd begin with my 06 all over again.

I guess it would have to be My Beretta S-58 with all it's sub guage tubes, plus additional barrel liners in .357 Max., 30/30, .223, .444, .22 Hornet, and probably one in 7.62X39. Would add additional calibers as needed. a .22 barrel set up to accept 209 primers could be used with .22 cal pellets.

I would want to keep my 700 nitro express searcy because I love it, but for my family protection, I would end up keeping my glock 20 and several 15 shot clips. I would hate to think of only getting to keep one gun. What a freakin NIGHTMARE!!!!!

My H&R 22-250 Ultra Varmint Fluted. It will always put meat on the table.
That's easy, a Holland and Holland Royal in a 20 and 12 bore set. The current going rate is over $85,000.00 and with that I could fix this one gun business
I once saw on a post "A day with out shooting is a day busted"

That will depend on your interests and procided needs. What can take care of most of my hunting needs, self-protection 24/7, compitetion needs.
None, for I have too many needs from long range to up close.
For me I'll take my 1911 in .45 ACP and Colt .22LR conversion. And will be looking for one of those Springfield Armory uppers in .308Win or .30-06.
