View Full Version : Since zinc wheelweights are to be avoided....
I have recently acquired a few pails of wheelweights and there are some types that I have not come across previously. I was wondering if one, or more, of the avid casters could post some pictures of the wheelwheight types to be avoided because of zinc content? This would be a great help to me and, I'm sure, many others.
Thanks,
Steven

Zinc wheel-weights will not melt at 590F-600F. Therefore, you can cull the floaters, turn up the heat and pour uncontaminated ingots. I've had some WW's that wouldn't melt at 600F but will break up in a 640F melt when tapped with a metal kitchen spoon.

In my experience, I've found the lead wheelweights have the tab embedded in the weight. The zinc ones have the weight riveted to the tab.

gmd3006,
I've run across more steel weights with riveted clips than zinc ones. I use a magnet to check my weights and the ones that are scratch resistant yet non-ferrous are set aside as alleged zinc weights.
