I finally got my lead melter up and running this weekend with some Lyman #2 in it and had my Lee 6 cavity mold all prepped and ready.

The Lee mold is a big honker...not for those who are lacking forearm strength.

Out of 90 bullets dropped, 78 were more than good enough for shooting. My rejects were tied to getting the mold upto temp in my cold garage. (only 45 F inside of it)

I hardly had to tap at all for the bullets to drop free... a small wooden dowel works well for this.

I then sized/installed gas checks with my Lee sizer, then lubed on my Lyman 45 and all of them were finished.

I loaded up some starline cases with 20gr of IMR4227 and will have them at the range this week for further testing.

These same bullets dropped from my old 2 cavity block were fun to shoot in my Winchester 94 Trapper.

I'll post pics later on.

Now, if only I could get as good a bullet mold for my 357 in 180gr gas checked...

What cartridge are you shooting the 300-grain bullet from? 45 Colt?

Yup.

45 long colt brass is Starline. (about as thick and heavy as it comes w/o going to a 454 case)

I trim all my cases before flaring so that it is EXACTLY the right amount. (see "reloading on a shoestring" article on technotes)

These bullets with 4227 in a Ruger (blackhawk or redhawk) will be abo****e tack drivers. They are not my "pet" load for my Winchester 94 trapper.

Felix lube appears to work well with these bullets at speeds under 1400fps. I have not had time to drive them any faster...

We've had great luck with this mold. My brother uses them in his five shot Clements Custom 45 Colt. We also use it in the top end loads for the Ruger Bisley. This bullet is the most accurate 45 cal we have.

Please share your load data and what alloy you use...

Lyman #2 is quickly becoming my choice overall.

It just casts so well all the time.

We're using wheel weights with 2% tin added. We're a bit nervous about posting the load we use with the 5 shot but we're using H-110. This is a double crimp groove bullet so we load to the bottom groove, closest to the base of the bullet (longest OAL).

Well, 20.5gr of 4227 is a hand full...not for the limp wristed crowd.

It puts you into solid 44mag territory.

For more "plinking" loads, I like a good solid helping of 13.8gr of Alliant 2400 with Winchester Large Pistol primers. A good solid roll crimp on the bottom crimp grove is all it takes. (1.65" OAL is what I measure)

The load with 2400 is what keeps me casting these buggers... its fun and has plenty of report and is clean too!!!

I have not tried H110 in it, yet... that is powder I really dont like to use all that often.

9gr of Clays Universal will also work well.

Lil'Gun is the powder most "big 45" shooters like to load with. I might have ot pick up a pound and try it out.
