Who's pumped for turkey season? Those of you who are also inflicted with turkey fever know what I am talking about. It was passed to me by my father at a very young age, so it must be genetic. He infected me by having me tag along with him in the spring woods, and by bringing home the turkeys so I could take a close look for myself. With that being said, there is no cure so you will have to get through this with no treatment. If you are like me, that won't be a problem at all, but a blessing. The wild turkey is a magnificent bird which I feel lucky enough just to see in the woods, let alone haul one out over my shoulder. I'm attaching some pictures of my gobbler I shot last year. I took a week off of work and only heard two gobbles and that was across a large river which I couldn't cross. The last day I had off, I almost didn't go out because it was cold and raining at 4:30 in the morning. I cursed the weather and decided to go out anyhow. At 5:45 I decided to give a quiet hen yelp. All of a sudden the thunder of the gobble struck me from about 100 yards up the hillside I was sitting on! Time to move. I crawled about 50 yards closer and sat against a large oak. I yelped and he gobbled. I could see him gobbling in half strut on a tree limb about 40 feet up! I gave hin one more soft yelp, and he flew down about 50 yards to my left across a little brook that runs down the side of the hill. He was in full strut and spitting and drumming all the way to me! He stopped at the edge of the brook and I dropped him at 30 yards. He then rolled over and flopped right into about 2 feet of muddy water. He didn't look too pretty, but an ugly bird is better than no bird! His tail feathers cleaned up real well after washing them in some dish soap and blow drying. Happy hunting. Gobble, gobble!

Yup, I got to go down on the 1'st and get my turkey tag and might as well add a bear tag at the same time. Turkey opens in the middle of next month.

I just picked up a new camo Mossberg 835 ulti-mag and am going to put my Aimpoint 5000 on it as soon as the base and 30 mm rings show up.

I shot my hunting partners last fall and got a nice hen. Hens and jakes are both legal in the fall hunt. I'm really looking forward to the spring opener. We are overran with turkeys here in this part of Idaho and I look for a two bird spring season next year.

Here's a pix of the one I got last fall.

I went for the first time 3 years ago I think, and although I didn't get one (one of our crew did), it sure was a lot of fun. The one we did get came right into a decoy with some calling at daylight. We set up several more times, and one of the guys missed clean on one quite close. Another setup and I got thoroughly busted by one sharp-eyed tom and never got a shot. They are one smart bird! Looking forward to a few days off for the opening on April 15 in N. Central ID.

I shot my hunting partners last fall

Were you practicing to go hunting with Dick Cheney? :D

I haven't decided if I'm going turkey hunting this spring or not... Toms are legal in the spring and Hens and Toms are legal in the fall... If you don't shoot one in the spring, you can get two in the fall, or one each season... I've got some serious vacation from work already planned for opening week of traditional rifle deer and elk season... I'm gonna go elk hunting this fall for sure... They already raised the prices of tags for the year, nearly double what they were last year...

Here in South Carolina, Turkeys can only be hunted in the month of April, and only Toms are legal. That being said, I and a friend are camping out near public land Friday night, and plan to be heading into the woods by 4 AM Saturday April 1st !!!! Official Sunrise is at 6:15 AM, so shooting light should be good at 5:45 AM.

Last year was my first Turkey hunting season, and I didn't get a single gobbler :( I did call a big Tom in, but he came in behind me, and across the river. Even though he was theoretically within my range, I didn't feel good about the shot, so I didn't take it. But man, watching him puff up and strut around, throwing out the occaisional gobble was the most amazing thing. Plus, it got me hooked hard and heavy :D

I'll be heading out Saturday morning with my Mossberg 500, loaded with some of the new HEVI-13 rounds I got as a sample. Hopefully, I'll have a successful hunt report to come back and tell you all about Saturday evening :D

I'm making a trade with a guy here at work today, one of my spare Aluminum Slate calls for one of his spare box calls. Two turkey hunters with turkey calls in the office 3 days before Turkey Season?! I don't see a whole lot of work getting done today, except maybe on my calling skills :p

Good luck to all who are out hunting the wiley gobbler this season, and shoot straight!

The office park I work in in Rancho Cordova, CA is overrun with wild turkeys. It's nothing to have to stop and let half a dozen of them cross the road in front of the car. Our offices are next door to the regional headquarters for Ducks Unlimited. They have several barbecues outside their offices - hmmm
