Beartoother, the Grand Prize winner in last year's match showed up today with his brother for a few days of hog hunting. Jeff (Beartoother) is off to a good start a few hours into the hunt with a fine boar hog. He is using his Marlin 1895M with a 325-grain Beartooth Bullet....

Yesterday (Tuesday) was very slow. No hogs sighted but plenty of deer to look at. High is in the low 90s which is not good for hunting. Hunters back out this morning. MikeG has joined us.

Sure beats what I did yesterday!! I was on call and put in a 18 hr day. Any day hunting is better than a day spent at work ;) Hammer those hogs!!

Well... we peaked early! Three and a half days of hard hunting and that hog killed the first day is as good as it got.
Dianna and I had an enjoyable time hosting the hunt and meeting Jeff and his brother Steve. It is always a great experience to share our place with others. It is unfortunate that the drought has it's grip on most of Texas. Please pray for rain in the South Central US!

It's not the destination but the journey. Glad to hear that it was a good time for all.

Congrats to the hunter.......wish we could send some of our Ohio rain your way. We're wetter than normal, the ground is saturated and runoff gorges the creeks and rivers. Flooding was a problem about 2 weeks ago.
Hope you get the rain.

They were pretty tough fighters but fortunately didn't have to use the .444 on any of them!
Haven't used the lead yet, but thanks again..... I'm sure it'll be recycled into a pork roast, albeit indirectly, one of these days.... :D
:D :D Pssst, don't tell Michael eh? ;)

My brother and I had a great time at the Ranch Dog ranch. The weather did not coperate for the hunt, it was hot with wind the whole week. The heard that came in the first day were the only hogs seen. We did see lots of deer, and a hawk sat on a tree branch about 10 feet from my face for awhile until I got antsy he might peck my eyes out and moved around enough to make him leave.
Ranch Dog and his family were excellent hosts. We were treated to not only the finest in local cousine, but great home cooked meals as well. Ranch Dog has quite a set up. His backyard range is really nice. Concrete pad for the shooting bench, berms at each distance (50, 100, etc.), electricity outlet. Better than a lot of public shooting ranges I've seen.
I think it speaks very highly of Ranch Dog to offer a hunt on his ranch to a complete stranger and guest, paying for the meals, license and letting them stay at his hoiuse, based solely on a drawing.
THANKS RANCH DOG FOR A GREAT TIME.

You are welcome Beartoother and thanks for the kind words. Still no hint of rain... this part of the country is in DEEP trouble! 2.9" since September 1, 2005!!!
The pack of hogs showed up again at the tower blynd. Dianna wants to try to shoot a squealer with the 336-44 your brother was hunting with.

We have had some rain the last couple of days. It is going to help. The hogs have been a bit more numerous and I'm back to seeing them on a regular basis. I haven't hammered any yet as I want them to get comfortable again.

Sounds like you managed to avoid some of the storms that have pounded the San Antonio area lately. Here in the UC/RAFB area I measured 2 inches of rain in between the hail one night and then a total of 3" more a few days later.
Maybe you can have a scratch and dent, hail sale hog hunt!

I can run them off again with the .500 JRH, if they get too out of hand and start rooting up the yard again :D :D :D
