Here's what I found when I went scouting last month. The field where I went scouting I've seen rooting before, and I didn't hardly see any, just maybe patches about 8x8 foot. Now this compared to our old ranch, where I'd seen almost a whole acre destroyed. However, I did see conical depressions in the ground, evenly spaced, all around the rooted ground. Can I assume that this is boars tusks penetrating the ground? I also found a little fecal material, but not much. Obviously there are not many pigs in the area, but this field has cattle in it during the winter and spring months, could they be pushing the pigs out? When they are moved out this summer, I'm hoping that the pigs will be back...thoughts anyone?

Depending on how deep the holes are, they could be from the boars tusks but I doubt it. Here in california the boars tusks usually dont get to be very large. I think that the rooting and the feces are good sign of pigs. However, being that there is only a small amount of each they could just be passing through so keep your eyes open. The cattle shouldn't be a problem unless the ranchers are out there taking care of them a lot. Most of the time they will live together without any problems. Their active times are off as well; when the cows are sleeping at night the pigs are up rooting around. The area where I pig hunt here in southern california is on a vineyard that also has cows. The cows don't seem to bother the pigs. Just keep watching. You might find that the pigs are passing through again and get your chance.

Where are there pigs in S. Cal? I know some areas but they're closed to hunting by Riverside Bd of Supers or cause land was made into a park.

Im up here in Bakersfield, CA, but I've heard there are lots of them on the coast too. If you want a guaranteed hog, contact Tejon Ranch, they have guided hunts that aren't too expensive.

There are pigs just about everywhere in california except for the desert. They are mostly concentrated on the central coast, but as mentioned the tejon ranch has an impressive population. One of the best places for pig hunting is monterey county. More pigs are taken there each year than anywhere else in the state. I'm pretty sure that up in that area they are European/feral hybrids. I think that the ones I've hunted in santa barbara county are just feral judging by there coloration(mostly pink or white with black and brown spots).

I think Kern County is second :)

Thanks for the info btw there are some pigs in the desert according to a hunting friend who has seen pig tracks along water sources near Victorville.

Where is Tejon Ranch located and what is the contact information? Are the central coast hog hunting areas on public or private land? If private what is the procedure to secure hunting access? Drawing a straight east/west line through Santa Barbara from the coast to the AZ line are there hog hunting areas south of that line and if so are they on public or private land?

Tejon Ranch is the largest single private landowner in California, and is located just on the north side of the grapevine (range at the bottom of the central valley) and here's an article I just found giving the contact information and an overview of some of the going ons at Tejon.
