Well, I've been reading up on the numerous scopes offered and favored by the '95GS owners. All I've accomplished is to confuse myself.

We've loaded the 45-70s from 'mild to wild' and really enjoy shooting all the flavors in the GS and our Cowboy!

Now it's time to scope it - my old eyes aren't what they used to be - and I'd like a few questions answered.

I have a quick detach scope mount on my Ruger MkIII Hunter - anything like that for the GS?

Also, I'd like a high mount that would allow me to use the iron sights OR could I use a Ghost Sight arrangement UNDER the scope? I'm not clear
on that.

The barrel is NOT ported but will be using some occasional stiff loads - how do scopes hold up under that kind of pounding on a big bore like the GS?

I'd appreciate any other pointers/suggestions that you may have.

Thanks, in advance.

Probably going to confuse you some more.

High mounts are the enemy for several reasons:
1. the higher the mount, the MORE likely recoil is to loosen it (just like a long lever more easily moves a weight, can think of height as the length of the lever the barrle has to work with).
2. High mounts force you to shoot with poor face support from the stock.
3. think about #2...if you give heavy load recoil a running start at your face, it's going to hurt.

So I've got to vote for a low/tradtionally mounted scope.

And for a 45-70, think I'd go with a low power variable..something with a 1.5X to 2X low end.

I will have to agree with ribbonstone as far as the low mounts being better. Also the low power scope would be best. Fixed power on something with high recoil would be best in my opinion. Like he said, 2X is plenty. All you are doing is giving yourself something to aim with. With the old eyes, you are just going from the blurry iron sights to a clear crosshair to aim with. No need for a high powered scope.

Warne Maxima bases and QD rings allow scope removal and replacement with return to POI. The bases are low enough that you can use the open sights with the scope removed. If keeping the rig in the silver is important to you, the Warne Maxima bases and QD rings come in silver and Leupold makes the VX-II 3-9x40mm or VX-III 2.5-8x36mm in silver. The XS Sight Systems scout mount (only in matte) works well with the Warne Maxima QD rings and the Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm scout scope comes in silver. Otherwise, I don't mind the look of matte mounts and scopes on stainless rifles. The Leupold VX-II 1-4x20mm is hard to beat on a 45-70.

I have the scout scope set up on my gun, with leupold QD rings and and scope and the XS gost sites as well... hence the QD rings. Love this set up. it is easy to carry and many times I take the scope off while hunting in thick woods like in NY. and I will hunt with the scout scope on when I am out west. .2$

I use medium rings with the weaver one piece
works great for me. I have a Millet 4x32 Buck Silver
held quite well using the factory stuff.

I have the scout mount, I think its Ashley with a Leupold 4x 33 low rings. Its a great set up.I routinely use the Winchester 300gr Partition Golds, the Remminton 405gr and sometimes the Garrett 425gr Hammerheads. My first scope was a Simmons shotgun scope which didn't last 5 months.

Weaver bases, QD rings (as low as you can), 1 x4 or 1.5 x 5 Leupold!!! It don't get any better than that!!!

zapper are you still around?
yes the QR mounts are available
no, high mounts as mentioned are pretty risky for reliability with your "wild" loads
you can still keep your irons on if you go the Scout System(on the barrel) and they do not effect the use of the scope.
the scopes available like for example on my 1895GG is the Leupold 2.5 Scout in the Matte blk. mounted on the barrel handles all the rough loads I can shoot and still hold zero.

I understand the "blur" effect as my eyes are getting abit weak. So I asked here sometime back and got pretty much the same reply as you. I purchased Asheleys rail/base, TC Maxima QR rings and the Leupold 2.5X Scout Scope. Wonderful setup. Ease of use - quick handling- reliable- retains zero without exception when going back and forth from irons to scope. After you use this you will scratch your head and wonder just why in the world you did not do this years back. ;)

Tim
