With the exception of a special permit Shooting from the Road is strictly forbidden over here I applied for such a Permit several years ago & forgot all about it ! Much to my supprise & great joy ! My permit turned up today in the post :D Now I had been baiting the Dept concerned with Kangaroo shooting over the last couple of weeks & was convinced that this was some sort of Pay Back,for the treatment I've been handing out ! A Phone call later! It was confrmed that yeah cough up the money & it's yours ! Apparently two shooters who have had the monoply on this have both retired & my name was on the top of the list ! So it looks like I'll be being nice to the Dept for at least a Week !!!

Disabled hunters may shoot from a vehicle (not parked or on a road) and another person may collect and dress the animal out. However, THAT person must have a special permit issued by the Game & Fish that specifically names the disabled hunter, the type of game and the unit number of the hunt.

Road defination is any road maintained or designated by the State, County or Forestry Service. Private property roads or access trails don't count.

Yeah over here getting caught shooting from the road is confiscation of vehicle ,Firearms ,a hefty Fine & or Jail (& if it was stiil in place probarly the death penilty ) I counted 80 Roos the other night in between Pt Augusta & Quorn roughly 40kms & I was crying as I could'nt touch them & the damage they do to cars is amazing ! As soon as the ink drys on my permit ....I'll do my civic duty for the Motorists of the state ! (mind you it will have to worth it for te price I've got to cough up for the extra permit $500.00 Pa on top of the $800.00 I already have to pay out )

Shooting out of a vehicle isn't a problem over here. All roos are shot from a vehicle with the excption of the one dave had tied to the tree.

Had it been me, the rope would have had to be a short one! :D

Hey Dave, does that permit allow you to shoot from the hwy or just the back roads? I know when I was harvesting rabbits on the nullarbor we were only allowed within 500 mtrs of the Eyre hwy. I think the normal distance is 1000mtrs from any public rd if i remember correctly. As for shooting from a vehicle, with rabbits you dont even get out of the vehicle to pick em up, stick yer hand out the door and flick em straight onto the back of the ute. :D

With the exception of main highways & settled areas 6kms from any house or Town ship I'm allowed to work from roads on the verge & properties (that I have permission from ) Ie the Road from Pt Augusta to Quorn is soon to be my happy hunting ground !

Hey Bob! I started on Rabbits over 30 yrs ago (Trapping & shooting ) As for the Nullabour ! **** I shot foxes out there above Forrest,Mundrabilla ,Loongana & back towards the Border along the Transline & further North up to the Tree line ! You ever work for Harvey Gerney Or Doug bryant ? Harvey had a Place out at Eucla & Doug had a camp out at the 17mile donga north of Forrest on the Trans line ! I did some contract work Dogging for the APB as well! I near got locked up in Eucla one night as I (slightly under the weather :rolleyes: Ok I was as drunk as 90men)
wandered into the Police station & reported having seen a Whale ! (Bob will know what I'm talking about here ) When asked half way through the Paper work where I'd seen the said Whale I replied in the Car park ! I'm supprised no one else has ever reported it (It was a large Fibre Glass whale in the front of the Carpark of a Motel ,come fuel station ,come Hotel ! ) Needless to say the Cop was not impresse

I started at mundrabilla, but the drongo that sent me there didnt tell me the mixo had been thru a month before, so having lost a lot of dough setting up and getting there i moved to nullarbor NP on your side of the rpf based at koonalda homestead with about 5 other blokes. There were thousands of rabbits there but most of the blokes were spending more on their dope and booze than diesel and bullets, it was a dangerous place to be and i gave it away after several months.

Hey but while i was out there i think i solved the local alien mysteries
Firstly, the woman that had her car lifted and turned around is an easy one. She was probably half asleep at the wheel and hit one of those thumpin great wombats out there, i reckon one of them would lift and turn your car :D
secondly the alien spaceships with their multi colored lights, theres a track runs along the escarpment at mundrabilla which you would be able to see from the hwy in places and we used to use it and had multi colored spotties on our cars to try and confuse the bunnies. On a dark nite all you would see from the hwy would be lights slowly moving above the ground :D

As for the coppers, im sure someones caused them to develop a low opinion of shooters in SA, i went to ceduna and parked the ute outside the pub just as a cop walked past. He looked at the rabbit rack on the back and the sandbags on the dash and just sneered and said "bloo&$ shooters, stay out of trouble while your in town"

Naw mate The coppers in Ceduna & I were always on very Good terms .....We were & still are lookin for a cove by the name of MAX WHITE ! Sounds like you probarly met some of Dougs shooters with the Drugs & booze ! It's amazing that they never shot each other let alone Rabbits ! Steered well clear of em myself ! IN both ceduna & across the bay at theabinard the Cops hate a unhealthy dislike of Rabbit shooters ! Roo shooters & Fox shooters were tolirated !AS for me I was ignored ! (Mind you several of them transfered to Cobber Pedy & I got the behave warning there) :D

It's a funny thing ! Although the Pro shooting industry is spread over a wide area of Australia Places like the Nullabur have only ever been shot by a small part of the community .Due to it's remoteness ! Problem is it was also as Bob will agree a dumping ground for social misfits ! Mundrabilla (there are actualy 3 differant Mundrabillas ....Mundrabilla Road house ,Mundrabilla Station/home stead & Mundrabilla a deserted Railway siding !) Some years ago a Woman lay claim to the fact that her car had been lifted off the road (the eyre highway ) & turned round,overturned ect By a UFO ! This led to numours sightings through this area ! Which can be explained by the fact that you can see for miles in this country & there were many shooters working this area at times!
THe thing that can not be expliained in this country is what is called a MIN-MIN light (one explanation is that they are illuminus gas balls escaping from the ground ) They look like a light in the distance & you can never get close tothem & people have got lost over the years trying to locate them up close ! I've known inexperianced shooters to chase them for hours thinking they were another shooter !Especialy some of the Rabbit shooters ! That were only out there as they were too Zonked out of their minds with Drugs & Booze to get a start with any Deciant Proccessor! Bobs case rings true of many of the Proccessors out there ! If they found a decient shooter they would do & say anything to get them out there so they had a chance of earning a living from a decient Shooter & not the crazies that they seemed to have land on their door step! Like Bob though, true Pros soon woke up to what was going on & moved on!

The latest explaination I have heard of the Min Min is that it is an owl, Most likely the barn owl, hunting. It is thought they fly slowly a few feet above the ground emiting an emzine or something, which glows, to scare insects.
It is probibly more interesting if it remains a mystery.
